NEDFEST ON THE FLATS!!!

Lift your Spirit!

Thursday, the 11th of September, 2003

Now that the dust has settled I would like to thank everyone for their help and support in pulling off another successful Nederland Music & Arts Festival! There were no problems and the event went off without a hitch. The weather on Saturday was perhaps the finest NedFest has ever seen and the music was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Weather didn't cooperate nearly as well on Sunday, with three sporadic rainstorms, but the music was phenomenal nonetheless.

These being economically-challenged times, however, the event was not really a success from a financial standpoint for the first time since it's rookie year five summers ago. Because of this we are throwing another party!!! This mini-festival will be in Boulder... down in the flatlands... and is a fundraiser of sorts (NOT a "benefit") to help keep NedFest going. Much gratitude to all the musicians for donating their precious time.

"NedFest on the Flats" is scheduled at the Boulder Theater on Thursday, the 11th of September (of all days) and will feature performances from Stanley Jordan (solo), Heavy G & the Boogaloo Communicators, Zuvuya, Blackdog w/ The PsychoHorns, Samba Dende, an African ensemble called Fenye featuring Guinea, West Africa's Fara Tolno... PLUS a whole bunch of top local Front Range bands and musicians!!! The evening will end with a very special
Nederland Acid Jazz session featuring Stanley Jordan (guitar - jazz legend), Mike Travis (drums - String Cheese Incident; Zuvuya, Zilla), Ross Martin (guitar - Theory of Everything; Tony Furtado Band; The Motet, etc...), Jans Ingber (vocals - The Motet; Samba Dende; Fenye), Greg Raymond (keys - The Motet; One Flight Up), Kirwan Brown (bass - Opie Gone Bad), John Zangrand (saxes & flutes - a Denver jazz heavy), Jamie Janover (percussion - Zilla; Realms Ensemble), Scott Messersmith (percussion - The Motet; Galactic), special guests Kyle Hollingsworth (keys - String Cheese Incident; Durt) and Greg Schochet (mandolin - All Night HonkyTonk All Stars; Runaway Truck Ramp) plus more to be announced?!? This show is very inexpensive and will be run festival-style. Doors open at 7:30 PM and music will run from 8 PM to 2 AM.

The Boulder Theater has graciously rented us their venue at a reduced rate. Also, long time NedFest supporter Twisted Pine Brewing Company will be offering $ 2.50 pints of their tasty microbrew with a souvenir NedFest cup. Cups will be available at the show, as will NedFest t-shirts, window stickers, and posters. Proceeds from this show go toward making sure NedFest can continue.

This is an opportunity to see a great concert AND show your support for what has become one of Colorado's premier music events! There really is nothing quite like NedFest.

We hope to see you in a few weeks at "NedFest on the Flats."

Gotta keep the festival alive!!!

I feel honored to hold NedFest during this time. Look for it to fall during 'The Nine Day Week' in the future.

NEDFEST ON THE FLATS!!!

THURSDAY 9/11/03
(Screw the terrorists... we can dance!)

8:00 PM to 8:55 PM (55) - FENYE is an African ensemble that features Guinea, West Africa's Fara Tolno (vocals), Boubacar Diabate (kora), Jans Ingber (vocals & percussion), Bill Kopper (guitar), Ricardo Gonzalez (drums), Kevin Barry (bass), Dan Isbell (trumpet), Greg Harris (keys) and Chantelle Mead (vocals).

9:00 PM to 9:55 PM (55) - BLACKDOG (with the PSYCHOHORNS) features Jon 'Blackdog' Ridnell, who has been playing guitar and writing songs for over 20 years. He was born in Bronxville, NY, and discovered the Blues at an early age through Eric Clapton. Ridnell later discovered a taste for jazz, studying with greats Link Chamberlain, Steve Brown, and Jim Hall. His voice has come into it's own with a unique style, rounding off his musical sound greatly. This jazz, funk, blues, calypso trio is rounded out with a steller rythmn section including Dave 'The Pump' Solzberg on bass, and Todd May on drums. The trio will be joined by the horn section from the Psychedellic Zombies with Eric 'Dujon' Schneider on trumpet and Kurt Moorehead on sax.

10:00 PM to 10:25 PM (25) - ZUVUYA with XANDER GREEN (guitar) is a great trio which also features Mike Travis (drums - String Cheese Incident/Zilla) and Jamie Janover (hammered dulcimer - Zilla/Realms Ensemble)!

10:30 PM to 11:25 PM (55) - HEAVY G & THE BOOGALOO COMMUNICATORS are a band with a mission: To dust off and dress up the long-lost hits of organ jazz, a musical staple of black neighborhood clubs of the mid-1950s to the early ‘70s. "We are paying homage to organ jazz," says Javier "Heavy G" Gonzalez, the Boulder band’s founder and guitarist. "But we add our own twist to this rich jazz tradition." The organ greats of yesteryear helped give birth to the deep grooves so common in modern dance music. Pioneers such as Jimmy Smith taught jazz fans that keyboards, if stroked properly, are sexiest of all. Big John Patton, Jack McDuff, Larry Young and Freddie Roach all pushed the boundaries of organ music, influencing and being influenced by the soul, funk and R&B stylings of the era. Hip Hop acts have revitalized interest in the music by sampling its heavy bass lines, which are played by the organist rather than a bassist. But unlike today’s samplers, Heavy G & the Boogaloo Communicators want to give back rather than loot this booty of urban music. The band’s song list is drawn from the works of the aforementioned artists as well as original ‘Communicator’ compositions written tastefully within the Boogaloo feel. And no show would be complete without a number or two from Lonnie Smith, perhaps the greatest jazz organist ever. "He is one of the funkiest of them all," says Gonzalez. In addition to Gonzalez, the Communicators are comprised of Jarad Astin on the Hammond, Damieon Lee Hines on drums and Ben Senterfit on sax. All four are members of the Boulder/Denver acid jazz band United Dope Front.

11:30 AM to 12:15 AM (45) - STANLEY JORDAN has already made a name for himself as one of the most significant guitarists of the latter 20th century. He is best known as a guitarist who has made major technical and musical contributions to his instrument. Trying to describe him in simple terms is like trying to explain Einstein's Theory of Relativity in ten words or less. He uses what is called the "Touch" or "Two-handed Tapping" technique to achieve a level of orchestral complexity equaling that of a keyboard. He can sound like two or three guitarists at the same time with no overdubs or other studio techniques. He uses 'hammer-ons' and 'pull-offs'... techniques that have been around for a long time... but Jordan has raised this art to an unprecedented musical level and has used it to express his unique musical vision. Other players such as Jimmy Webster, Lenny Breau, Edward Van Halen and Emmett Chapman have also used the technique, but Jordan discovered and developed it independently and today he is widely regarded as the first "Touch Virtuoso." Much of the attention surrounding his sudden rise to fame in the mid 80s was based on his technique. Because it is so startling, so strikingly unusual, it is easy to see how it can make a dominating first impression. But what has become more and more clear through the years is that he has the musicianship and creativity to match. His music is embued with a combination of passion, sensitivity, humor and shear brilliance. His technique never overwhelms his music. In fact, he says that since the early 80s he has been focusing much more on expressiveness than on speed and complexity. Could it be then, that many of his listeners still have not heard the full range of his abilities? Certainly what they have heard has made his live concerts legendary. Many who see him perform for the first time are struck by the emotional intensity of his playing. There are times when he seems totally immersed in the music. He plays with an uncommon depth of feeling, and as a listener it is hard not to be affected by this feeling. Before you know it, you are drawn in to a new musical world with its own rules and its own seemingly limitless possibilities. Whether he's spinning out ever-new variations on songs he's played for years, or creating new songs on the spot, his shows are dependably unpredictable. So, what kind of music does Stanley Jordan play? Although he was originally marketed as a jazz artist his direction has boldly evolved into a broad synthesis of styles. How do you classify an artist who freely mixes baroque and blues in the same phrase? Or who can lay down a jazzy walking bass line plus chords with one hand on one guitar while simultaneously playing a rock lead with distortion and feedback on another guitar with the other hand?

12:15 PM to 1:30 AM (75) - NEDERLAND ACID JAZZ is a live, improvisational jazz performance in which the roster of musicians changes from week to week. The players usually do not know with whom they will be performing until they show up, and often they have never performed with one and other ever before. At times they have not even met until just before the gig… hence the acid in this acid jazz! You never know what you're going to get, but this always-evolving cast of extremely high-caliber musicians forces a fresh spark and creates a brand-new sound every time. This special NedFest NAJ will feature Stanley Jordan (guitar - jazz legend), Mike Travis (drums - String Cheese Incident; Zuvuya, Zilla), Ross Martin (guitar - Theory of Everything; Tony Furtado Band; The Motet, etc...), Jans Ingber (vocals - The Motet; Samba Dende; Fenye), Greg Raymond (keys - The Motet; One Flight Up), Kirwan Brown (bass - Opie Gone Bad), John Zangrand (saxes & flutes - a Denver jazz heavy), Jamie Janover (percussion - Zilla; Realms Ensemble), Scott Messersmith (percussion - The Motet; Galactic), special guests Kyle Hollingsworth (keys - String Cheese Incident; Durt) and Greg Schochet (mandolin - All Night HonkyTonk All Stars; Runaway Truck Ramp) plus more to be announced?!?
