Top 15 Reasons to go to NedFest this summer...
1) Extended Hours - NedFest has been approved to go from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM on Saturday, August 27th with a late-night jam in town that will go until 2:00 AM included in the price of your NedFest 2005 ticket. Additionally, we've been approved to go from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM on Sunday, August 28th. Live performances begin at 11:00 AM each day... totaling over 21 hours of live music. This will allow for longer sets from each band.
2) Super Inexpensive Tickets - Advance Weekend Passes are currently only $ 42.00 (plus variable service charges depending on where you purchase them) and Single Day Tickets cost just $ 23.00. These discount prices are the cheapest since our 1st Annual NedFest back in 1999. Get your tickets now cuz they are selling like hotcakes!!
3) MicroBrew Festival - Tasty beers from several local microbreweries will be on hand at the Festival this year... and for only $3.00 a pint! Thus far we have confirmed Twisted Pine Brewing Company, Left Hand Brewing Company, Oskar Blues, Dillon Dam Brewery, plus award winning honeywine from Redstone Meadery... and more breweries are jumping on board. Also joining us this year will be our pal Dan Brodie, whose company 'CTS Distributing' features fine wine served in specialty cans. Wine in a can may seem atypical, but wait until you try it!
4) The Line-up of Bands - Kan'Nal, The Motet w/ Cecil P-Nut Daniel, Tony Furtado Band, Fareed Haque Group, Shanti Groove, Leftover Salmon's Vince Herman & The Great American Taxi (w/ Acoustic Junction's Reed Foehl), Phix, Runaway Truck Ramp, Benny "Burle" Galloway & The Broke Mountain Quartet, Onda, Fulanis Afrobeat Ensemble, Mumbouli and more... with 'tweener sets from Alektorophobia (featuring Eric McFadden & Wally Ingram), Spoonfed Tribe's Weapons of Mass Percussion, The Eldorans, The Nedrecks (feat. Phil Moynihan & Cowboy Keith), Danny Shafer, Arthur Lee Land, Bill McKay, Patrick Latella, Doug Baker, Jubal & Rob Gower... plus more to be announced.
5) The Sound - Our production company this year is Sweetwave Audio. They will be bringing their brand new Meyer Line array speakers and Soundcraft mixing boards. You may recall hearing the amazing Meyer sound if you saw any of the last several hundred Grateful Dead shows. Meyer speakers are simply the best concert speakers made, and we are excited that Sweetwave will be taking us to the next step in sound quality. The new line array technology will help us put the sound exactly where we want it: Not too loud in front and not too quiet in back... a better listening experience for all.
6) A new, better, Professional Stage - No more wedding tent. It's gonna look great from wherever you are in the Festival grounds. This new stage will also help our sound, and we are also upgrading our lighting rig this year as well. Pretty exciting stuff!
7) Nederland, Colorado is beautiful - Located just 17 miles west (3,000 ft. above) of Boulder, the Festival's waterfront location has amazing views of the Rocky Mountains and the Continental Divide. The town has a long musical history dating back to the late 60's and early 70's... back in the day when Stephen Stills used to get thrown thru the window of a local drinking establishment. It's a great little hippie town!
8) Camping - Although there is no camping allowed directly within Nederland's Town limits, there are a great number of places to camp in the nearby area unaffiliated with the Festival for those willing to rough-it in order to save some bucks... many of which are 100% FREE!!! Click Here for more info about that.
9) Tickets for Kids 12 & under are FREE... and so are Over The Rainbow's activities at the Kid's Tent.
10) Free Parking - Yes, it's true, but keep in mind that parking in small-town Ned is limited, so please carpool. You can also ride the bus up from Boulder. The bus's first stop in Ned is an extremely short walk to the NedFest Box Office.
11) Free Water - Paying for water at Festivals and concerts sucks! We'll hydrate and re-hydrate you for free, compliments of our friends at Indian Peaks Springwater.
12) Great Food and lots of local Arts & Crafts - All kinds of quality eats this year including The Corn Roaster, Dr. Fungi, Tastes Like Chicken, and Executive Catering's extended menu of killer cookery, plus more. There are still Vending spaces available, so if you are interested in Vending, Please Click Here.
13) You'll be supporting several good causes - Multiple non-profit corporations including Boulder Bio-Diesel, Rock The Earth, Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, A.D.T.O.T. and several others will be on hand to help keep you informed about things relevant to our local and World community.
14) NedFest is an independent, grassroots, homegrown, non-corporate event that is organized and staffed by kind, cool, down-to-earth mountain folk who know how to have a good time.
15) It's one heck of a party!!!

11:00 AM - MUMBOULI - Q. Who is Mumbouli? A. Mumbouli is us. Q. What does Mumbouli mean? A. Many things. Depends on who you ask in the band.... but ask yourself what Mumbouli means, and feel the warm glow of truth wash over you.... Q. Are you guys supposed to be a Bluegrass band? A. No. Q. What the hell is Slap-a-Billy? A. Ahhhhhh, Slap-a-Billy was a term we coined after not being able to accurately describe the type of music we play. Slap-A-Billy has been described as "the bastard child of an unholy union between bluegrass and rock-n-roll" But our musical influences far surpass that. We draw inspiration from pretty much all mediums. Q. Beer or Liquor? A. Both. Q. How did I get on your mailing list? A. You may have signed up while drunk at one of our shows, or perhaps one of your friends signed you up (probably while drunk). Q. Can I get a CD ? (aka Do you have CD's for sale?) A. Yes and No. The "Yes" answer: We have several compilations of live material we give out for free when we play. If you want one, just ask at one of our shows and we will provide you with one. The "No" Answer: After a few false starts in 2003 the first as of yet un-named Mumbouli studio CD will be completed and available to the public in mid 2004. It will consist of all original material and will rock. We will keep you posted. Q. Who is the chick sometimes playing fiddle with you guys? A. That would be Erin Long, she plays with Mumbouli in a part-time permanent capacity. Q. Did you know you guys rock? A. Yes. Q. Do you guys take baths together and braid each others hair? A. No.
12:15 PM - ‘tweener: DOUG BAKER is a Boulder-based acoustic guitarist. Whether he's playing intricate instrumentals or singing tightly composed originals mixed in with a few covers, Doug will surely make you wonder how he pulled off that last lick.
12:35 PM - BENNY "BURLE" GALLOWAY has quickly proven to be one of the finest songwriters on the Colorado bluegrass scene. Recently gaining notoriety for writing and performing all of the songs on the Yonder Mountain String Band’s 2003 release "Old Hands", 'Burle' ventures into the root of old-time American music. Prior to "Old Hands", Galloway was often known as "the best kept secret" on the Colorado grassroots music scene! In the live setting he delivers a soulful blend of bluegrass, gospel, country and delta blues that will tickle any grassroots music lover’s fancy. At NedFest, he'll team up with four members of Durango’s BROKE MOUNTAIN BLUEGRASS to form "Benny Galloway & The Broke Mountain Quartet." Truth be told, Broke Mountain has been causing quite a stir of their own, wowing audiences across the country with their hard drivin’ high-energy blend of technical bluegrass. With one foot firmly rooted in the traditions and structures of bluegrass music and the other foot pressed firmly on the gas pedal, this exciting new band brings a young energy to our country's oldest music. Since the inception of the band in the Spring of 2003, Broke Mountain has been wowing audiences and gaining fans from Oregon to North Carolina. After only two months of playing together, Broke Mountain was awarded first place award in the 2003 Rockygrass Band Competition in Lyons Colorado, while members of the band also won first place in the mandolin and banjo contests. In the summer of 2004, Broke Mountain released their much celebrated first album "Cabin In the Hills", which contains mostly original material and will surely stand the test of time. Whether Broke Mountain is playing to a festival audience, a roomful of seasoned bluegrass fans or a crowded bar, these young guns put on an exciting, high energy show that is very fun! Often compared to a young Seldom Scene because of thier similar instrumentation, strong harmonies and unique songs, their live shows exude an energy that grabs a hold of seasoned bluegrass fans and newcomers alike. Broke Mountian is able to play and sing impeccable bluegrass music while not taking themselves too seriously and having lots of fun. Quite simply... their music is infectious- don't miss this band!! Broke Mountain is made up of Anders Beck on dobro, Travis Book on bass and vocals, Robin Davis on mandolin and vocals, Chad Love on Banjo and Jon Stickley on guitar and vocals. Old Hands or New Hands, this NedFest performance is hands down not to be missed.
2:00 PM - ‘tweener: DANNY SHAFER is a songwriter in every sense of the word. With over 100 shows a year, his performance varies from Troubadour Fingerstyle to Country Blues, to his Full Americana band, The Red Glory Ramblers. In every setting, Danny brings his acclaimed songwriting. He always holds an audience and rarely takes a break. Varied yet consistent, Danny Shafer does it all!
2:30 PM - PHIX - When Phish, called “the most important band of the 1990’s” by Rolling Stone magazine, announced their breakup in the summer of 2004, the jamband world was taken by surprise. Their followers, whose loyalty could easily rival that of the Deadheads, were left high and dry. 70,000 people traveled from all over the country to attend Phish’s farewell concert in northern Vermont in August, 2004. They faced epic traffic jams, mud, rain, and 10-mile hikes to make it to the shows. Few bands in history have inspired this type of devotion, and their departure has left a void in the music world that will be virtually impossible to fill. Here to offer a helping hand is the Boulder, Colorado-based quartet Phix. Capturing the sound and spirit of Phish’s music with astonishing accuracy, they have been seeing remarkable success traveling the country and recreating the Phish experience for both new fans and long-time followers alike. In about two years on the road, they played over 250 shows in over 30 states. In addition to putting on great shows at great venues, the band has been known to work with The Mockingbird Foundation, where they raise money for school music programs. Phix was the brainchild of guitarist Paul Murin and keyboardist Derek Berg, who had played original music together in the Chicago area throughout the 1990’s. The idea for the band was actually sparked in 2000 when Phish, at the height of their popularity, announced a hiatus from which they would not return until 2003. Further inspiration came from the Dark Star Orchestra, an extremely successful Grateful Dead tribute band—also from Chicago, and longtime friends of Murin and Berg. After relocating to Colorado, they met drummer Chris Sheldon and bassist Brian Adams. The project came together quite quickly even though it required the band to learn well over 100 songs, many of which are quite complex. “Derek and I had played a few Phish tunes together in the past. We were huge fans of the music, and playing it made us into better musicians,” says Murin. They manage the material quite well; fans at their shows often remark that if they close their eyes, they can hardly tell the difference during the composed sections of the songs. The reaction to Phix has been almost universally positive, despite initial skepticism on the part of some audience members. “A lot of people think we won’t be able to pull it off, which is understandable because the music is pretty difficult,” says Sheldon. “But we try really hard to learn the tunes accurately. We really do love this music, and I think people can see that.” Phix not only recreates the songs themselves, but they also recreate the experience of a live Phish show, complete with an intelligent light show and open-ended improvisations. “Phish fans know that the jams are the centerpiece of the live shows,” says Berg. “That’s where the real energy is, and that’s what people want to hear.” Bassist Brian Adams adds, “That’s why this band is so much fun for us—there’s a lot of room for our own creativity built into the music. We all had reservations about being in a tribute band but with the open-ended nature of this music, and the fanatical demand for it, it’s been overwhelmingly meaningful and satisfying.” Even after Phish returned from their hiatus in 2003, Phix continued to see attendance figures growing, and their reputation continued to spread. But they never really imagined a time when Phish would call it quits for good. “It’s humbling and flattering to think that people might be looking to us to experience the music they love so much,” says Murin. “We understand how important the music is to the fans, and we realize that some people think we’re treading on sacred ground. But I think that once people see one of our shows, they realize that we’re doing it out of a genuine love and respect for the music.”
4:00 PM - ‘tweener: JUBAL is a multi-instrumentalist. His forte is guitar; lead, rhythm, acoustic or electric. He also plays bass. He's played bass on numerous recording projects and for a two-year stretch with the Jamaican ska band "The Stingers". He even gets hired as a percussionist occasionally. Jubal holds a music theory degree from the University of Arizona and also sings powerful lead and precise harmony vocals. He's been writing and performing his own brand of music for the last seventeen years and, thanks to 21st-century technology, need not lug a bass drum on his back to be a one-man band. For the recent Boulder transplant, all he needs is a guitar and tape-loop machine. That handy piece of electronics lets him perform his signature "psychelectric" blend of music, combining live guitar with foot-triggered bass and drum loops, ala Keller Williams, et al. At NedFest he will be joined by ROB GOWER on trumpet.
4:30 PM - TONY FURTADO BAND's stylistic range won't come as a surprise to anyone who's followed Furtado's history. He began playing in earnest at the age of 11 and was soon recognized as a prodigy. By the end of his teens he had won a pair of National Bluegrass Banjo Championships and joined noted fiddler Laurie Lewis' string band Grant Street. Although Furtado won widespread acclaim as one of bluegrass' hottest young players, one genre was hardly enough to satisfy his musical wanderlust. Striking out on his own with his 1989 solo debut 'Swamped', he quickly began adding new elements including Latin, Cajun, jazz, swing and Celtic influences to the mix. 1992's 'Within Reach' saw Furtado collaborate with such stellar players as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan, while 1994's 'Full Circle' delved deeply into acoustic blues and marked the artist's early explorations of slide guitar. Furtado's emergence as masterful slide guitarist was accompanied by a high-energy live show and a tireless touring schedule that's helped him to win a large and loyal grass-roots following. The fleet-fingered fretmaster is an equally engaging vocalist, and his latest release 'Bare Bones' captures what Tony does best — play his heart out on stages in clubs, at festivals and just about every place in between. Tony will be performing at Nedfest with special guest stars Christian Teele (e-town house drummer) on drums, and Matt Spencer (of The Motet) on bass. They have a remarkable synergy and together provide an irresistible, nasty groove and a seamless fusion of styles and influences, from folk to blues to jazz and beyond, with Furtado's supple, fluid slide guitar work illuminating the melodic and emotional nuances. Banjo player and slide guitarist Tony Furtado has carved his niche among musical giants. If missed him on tour opening for the Allman Brothers this spring, you should really come see what all the fuss is about!
6:00 PM - ‘tweener: THE NEDRECKS: Phil Moynihan is that annoying Nederland local who sings and plays acoustic guitar in the most inappropriate places at all the wrong times. Ahhh... we like to kid him, but Phil is always a hoot around campfire parties at Michigan Mike's house... often striking up a sing-along when you'd least expect it. Think: The Beatles, Grateful Dead, The Stones, John Prine, etc. Bubbles provided! Joining Phil will be Cowboy Keith.
6:30 PM - RUNAWAY TRUCK RAMP succeeds wonderfully in producing a sound that is undeniably bluegrass-inspired, but incorporates many music styles. Rock, reggae, swing, folk, pop and jazz all intertwine with their swift picking, which creates a bluegrass-oriented music that will break make you a sweat dancing to. With Peter Fiori on acoustic guitar, Greg Schochet on mandolin and bouzouki, Lee Johnson on electric guitar and lap steel, Ed Caner on violin and fiddle, Jim Sullivan on fretless bass, and Jay Elliott on drums, Runaway Truck Ramp spins out multi-layered instrumentation that keeps the crowd up and grooving. Their vocals- contributed at different points by Fiori, Schochet and Johnson- create inspiring harmony that serves to lift the positive vibe of their stunning playing to an even higher level. Elliott and Sullivan skillfully lay down the rhythm, and RTR proceeds to rock through shows chock full of original material and some memorable covers. Schochet's feather-light and lighting-fast handling of the mandolin anchor many of the tunes to a pleasant bluegrass base, while Johnson's contributions on electric guitar and lap steel lend the band its rock and roll sound. Fiori's lead vocals and acoustic strumming keep the audience smiling just as wide throughout shows. Caner, the newest addition to Runaway Truck Ramp, joined up with the band in April and adds both careening energy and poignant beauty to the band's sound by way of masterful violin and fiddle playing that alternately whips up through stunning crescendos and down into almost whispering classical strains. Runaway Truck Ramp's sprightly and mischievous stage presence allays any doubt that they're having as much fun playing as the audience is having boogying down. The band's eclectic influences- from Bob Dylan to The Who to, yes, Judas Priest- come through during their showcase of original tunes.
8:00 PM - ‘tweener: PATRICK LATELLA has been composing in Colorado for nine years, and finds inspiration in the majestic mountains, enchanted forests, and endless skies of the West. His compositions have been featured in the Warren Miller Ski Movies, "Endless Winter" and "Snowriders II".
8:30 PM - KAN'NAL's earthy tribal sounds and shamanistic visuals take you on a journey that is hard to forget. Futuristic and primitive, rhythmic and sensual, this experience transcends labels and genres, signaling a new evolution in modern music. The group of travelers met and formed in 2001 around the mystical Lake Atitlan located in the high mountains of Guatemala. At first as a guitar driven duo and later adding otherworldly percussion, didgeridoo, and bass, the band was developing a style that stands alone. While building an impressive following in Guatemala, which included one Top 10 radio hit and shows before thousands of people, Kan'nal quickly developed their unique approach to live performance by adding dance and theatre to the show. In their time back in North America, Kan’Nal has been featured at such festivals as the Om festival Canada, 10,000 Lakes MN, Legends festival TX, Belle Chere NC, Dreamtime CO, Burningman NV, Earthdance CA, and toured throughout the states, Mexico, and Guatemala. The group has developed into an inspirational primal rock experience that amazes audiences everywhere. Driven by a rhythm-heavy wall of tribal sounds, featuring percussionist Gilly Gonzales, didgeridoo and percussionist Aaron Jerad, and bassist Rodolfo Escobar, Kan'Nal instantly grabs at your primal core. From heartfelt melodies to mind-bending trance, Tierro’s guitar weaves into the mix. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Tzol fronts each live show with his spellbinding, soulful voice and poignant lyrics. Enhancing the musical experience are performance divas Teresita and Akayate, who lead a revolving tribe of dancers, characters and storytellers that span the visual and verbal performance spectrum with live movement theater. Mind-bending projection visuals and phenomenal production truly make the Kan’Nal experience a multi-sensory event. As one tribe of conscious and creative individuals, Kan’Nal is an inspirational primal rock experience of mixed mediums that leaves audiences speechless, striking the perfect balance between the psychedelic visual and the sonic explosion.

10:30 PM - Late Night Show at the Black Forest Restaurant in Town - THE ETHEREAL PLANE is a band from Boulder County, Colorado that brings together a diverse musical background to form a sound that is an ever expanding journey through fusion, funk and rock as well as improvisational exploration. Combining liquid rhythms and liberty bell-bottom bass with soaring guitars, synth, loops and soulful vocals, the goal of the music is to unify the positive collective energy of the crowd and the band... and to encourage its growth. The trio consists of Patrick Latella (electric guitar, 6 & 12 string acoustic guitars, synthesizer, and vocals), Edwin Hurwitz (electric bass, bass synth, and loops), and Jason Folsom (drums, percussion, and vocals). They have been touring most of the summer, hitting Durango, Telluride, Albuquerque, Hollywood, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, Tampa, Clemson and Charleston... and will be returning directly from their West Coast tour to play Nedfest, having played Spokane, Olympia, Portland, Arcata, San Francisco, San Diego, Flagstaff and Durango along the way. This late night show will take place at Nederland's Black Forest Restaurant and is 100% FREE with a NedFest 2005 ticket (until the place reaches maximum capacity, of course). Without a NedFest 2005 ticket the show costs $5.00.

11:00 AM - ONDA is an eight-piece Latin dance ensemble based out of Boulder Colorado that has made a name for themselves in a very short time. Their repertoire is rooted in Afro Latin Jazz and spans traditional Afro-Cuban rumbas and salsas, jazz melodies and a wide range of Caribbean sounds. Onda (Spanish for "vibe") is about more than just music, presenting the relationship between music, audience and band, the collective spirit of the whole experience, and the respect and corazon of the Latin American family. Their live performances are energetic and uplifting, tasteful and suave, informative and entertaining. They average over 100 shows a year with a healthy mix of club, festival, theater and private event appearances... including regular house gigs at local Boulder hotspots Rhumba and Redfish. Their reputation as a top-shelf dance band and performance experience is well founded, as the group is made up of veterans from the Afro-Cuban, Jazz, and Latin music scenes in Boulder - including an explosive horn section, a tight rhythm section, seductive vocals and percussion - all of which contribute to the irresistable Onda groove. Band members are Oliver Ahern (piano), Kevin Barry (bass), Rick Demey (sax, vocals), Scott Mast (congas), Jonny Rademakers (timbales), Doug Scarborough (trombone), Eric Schneider (trumpet), Roberto Sequeira (lead vocals & percussion) and Ira Sweetwine (bongo). A large, devoted following accompanies the band to each show for a dance extravaganzo. Get to NedFest early this day to experience them firsthand!!

12:05 PM - FULANIS AFROBEAT ENSEMBLE, led by vocalist Geoffrey Omadhebo (Sonny Okosun, Albino!) and percussionist Friday Jumbo (Fela Kuti's Africa 70, Albino!), this Oakland-based, 6-piece all-star ensemble is influenced as much by West African makossa, highlife, & soukous music, as it is by the fiery musical legacy of renowned, Nigerian-native afrobeat inventor, Fela Kuti. But it manifests these influences by bringing its broad personality to the table, drawing upon the rich amalgam of its member's varied musical backgrounds to make its rhythm-steeped point. In the short period of time that has transpired since the group's inception, World-beat & Jamband lovers alike have latched on the primary ingredient behind this band's truly broad appeal: Fulanis Afrobeat Ensemble simply brings the house down every opportunity it gets! Melding tightly crafted arrangements and nuances of jazz-harmony with propulsive, high-energy grooves, for the innocent bystander, any quaint visit to a Fulanis (pronounced Foo-la-neez) show quickly becomes an all-out body-maneuvering experience. In addition to Omadhebo and Jumbo, the band is manned by Manu Dibango's renowned "Soul Makossa" bassist Simon "Soul" Maah (also known for his work with Sonny Okuson), Cameroonian afrobeat/highlife/soukous guitar master Didi Afana (Sonny Okosun, Manu Dibango), Bay Area keyboardist Ramon Lazo (Spearhead), and Fela Kuti's first trap drummer in the Egypt 80, Jojo Kuo (also known for his work with Manu Dibango, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, and many others). "Everybody say Yeah Yeah!"
1:20 PM - 'tweener: ALEKTROPHOBIA featuring Eric McFadden & Wally Ingram - Ingram says this tour will present the duo as originally conceived. His years of experience in a duo format inspire confidence that he and McFadden should have little trouble making it work. His hope is that they can present a broader sound that may be more representative of the album. "It's going to be a duo dynamic and pretty rocking duo. When people walk in the room and say, 'oh my God, that's a duo,' we want to sound like three or four people. That's our goal," stated Ingram.
1:45 PM - FAREED HAQUE GROUP has a sound that will appeal to many while compromising to no one. With diverse cultural and musical influences, the Group is opening new doors with a completely fresh approach to cosmic music that grooves. Fareed enjoys a career that spans the spectrum of musical styles. To say that he kills it on the six-string, would be an immense understatement: he plays acoustic and electric guitar, sitar and even plays a hybrid guitar/sitar. There are guitar players, and then there are guitar players! Fareed Haque is of the later category, a virtuoso. Moving easily between jazz and classical guitar, his versatility has created a demand for him with prominent jazz and classical artists including Medeski, Martin and Wood, Sting, Joe Zawinul, Cassandra Wilson, Leste Bowie, Dave Holland, Robert Walter, Carl Denson, Kahil el Zabar, Defunckt, and Ramsey Lewis. Born in 1963 to a Pakistani father and a Chilean mother, extensive travels, especially long stays in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan and Chile, exposed Haque to different musics from a very early age. This natural eclecticism has become the hallmark of Fareed's music. Around early the 90’s the Group was formed by Fareed to explore and incorporate all of his various musical influences into one compositional platform; to play music that can spring from and weave through jazz, classical, Latin, funk; as well as African and Indian music sensitivities, modern, hip-hop, trance and folk grooves. Since 2000 the Group has been one of the most active and cutting edge bands in the jamband an improvised music scene. Equipped with a DJ and a tabla player, FHG has been described as a "tantric meditation." They have recorded and toured extensively around the country, creating a very unique presence in various musical festivals. In 2001, Fareed co-founded the jam super-group Garaj Mahal; and since has joined George Brooks' group Summit, featuring Zakir Hussein and Steve Smith; as well as recording and touring with the Fareed Haque Group. Haque has performed all of the major guitar concertos, is an active transcriber of baroque as well as South American music and has had numerous modern works dedicated to him. The Group's "Cosmic Hug" CD is an unique combination of world, jazz, and jam. Earthy, vital, breezy, electric, and truly eclectic, it defies easy categorization. The Cosmic Hug also includes a bonus interactive section including an interview with Fareed Haque discussing his guitar techniques, as well as clips of the Fareed Haque Group performing live. FHG consists of Fareed (Electric Guitar, Steel String Guitar, Classical Guitar, Sitar Guitar, Keyboards), Kalyan Pathak (Tabla, Percussion, Voice), Jon Paul (Bass), Dan Leali (Drums), Dan Nimmer (Fender Rhodes, Electric Piano), and J. Cappo (Keyboards and Electronics).
3:10 PM - ‘tweener: ARTHUR LEE LAND’s lifelong musical journey has arrived at a point of rare accomplishment in the world of popular music – genuine innovation. Arthur Lee Land combines diverse influences to create a fresh new musical vibe: Afrograss Folk Rock. During a tour of Nigeria and Ghana, West Africa in 2001, Arthur spawned the concept of Afrograss: a synthesis of West African percussion and bluegrass in a folk rock context. As a multi-instrumental solo act, Arthur uses “loop” (live recording) technology to refine his musical vision, creating a One-Man Afrograss Folk Rock Ensemble. Inspired by the thriving Colorado music scene, Arthur uprooted from Chicago and in January 2004 moved to Boulder. His local legend is growing fast. His first performances at 2002 Rocky Mountain Folks Festival & Song School in Lyons, coupled with a flat-out inspiring self-produced Afrograss demo tape, caught the attention of Grammy Award Nominated songwriter and producer Wendy Waldman (Save The Best For Last, Fishin’ In The Dark, New Grass Revival). An enthusiastic Waldman offered to produce the upcoming recording project and enlisted an impressive roster of high-caliber musicians to help realize Arthur’s musical vision. He has sat in with Peter Himmelman as well as with many other performers who sought Arthur out for his remarkable guitar skills. This guy exudes musical magic.
3:35 PM - GREAT AMERICAN TAXI formed in March 2005 at the request of a local promoter to be an all-star band for a benefit show. After the first song was played, there was talk of future shows and plans. Some of these musicians have been playing together for ten years, and some have been wanting to for at least ten years! It's is a 7-piece Country/Rock/Americana group led by Leftover Salmon guitarist & frontman Vince Herman and Acoustic Junction's Reed Foehl. Single Malt Band's Jeff Hamer sings with them to round out the big-sounding three part harmonies, as well plays some bendy, chicken-pickin' stuff on his Telecaster. There's also a pedal steel guitar, played by Eben Grace, piano by Chad Staehly, drums by Jake Coffin, and bass by Jeff's old Single Malt Band compadre, Will Downes. The group sings and arranges interesting original material and makes up songs on the spot... at least Vince does. Their big, big sound melds rural twang and innovative rock textures, you might say. Or maybe folk roots with a psychedelic sheen. With Reed's soulful songwriting and Vince's incredible band leader qualities supported by the rest of the cast, this band might be the "next big thing" to come out of Boulder. The Great American Taxi will be rolling up to NedFest this summer and well worth the fare! TAXI!!!
5:05 PM - ‘tweener: THE ELDORANS, based out of Eldora, Colorado, is comprised of Mike Cutler (vocals, guitar, octave mandolin, mandolin) and Tom Gaukel (pedal steel)... plus whoever else they add to the the bill! Cutler was born fifth in a brood of seven - a "good Irish catholic family." At college in Colorado, he learned to play the mandolin, and led the bluegrass/newgrass band Whiskey B-4 Breakfast. In Boulder Colorado, he played in the popular Cajun/Zydeco band 'The Zukes of Zydeco' for three years. A trip to Ireland began an obsession with traditional Irish music. Mike studied "DADGAD" guitar with Eileen Neihouse, and together with Tahmineh Gueramy formed the O'Malleys and later The Threshers. He was also a member of the Weepers prior to moving back to Colorado.
5:30 PM - SHANTI GROOVE moves along acoustical and electrical lines, combining the voice of jazz and rock with back porch bluegrass and funktified percussion. Bringing their unique sound to venues nationwide, the band provides a musical celebration of the 'groove' kind. Stepping out with a strong selection of original compositions, Shanti Groove is an amplified acoustic band focusing on live improvisation; traditional Appalachian instrumentation framed by innovative drumming. The band has shared the stage with an all-star cast of musicians including: Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, Col. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbage, Ron Levy's Wild Kingdom, The Big Wu, Acoustic Syndicate, Steve Kimock, and the David Grisman Quintet. Recently recognized by the Denver Post as "a band clearly on the rise," and by Jam Base as one of the twelve bands to watch in 2004, Shanti Groove has spent the past year touring hard, performing nearly 200 sucsessful shows. Inciting high energy dancing, Shanti Groove is renowed for their candid live show which includes interplay between electric improvisation and un-plugged jams with the audience itself. Shanti Groove continues to grow as a band as it enters it's fourth year, maintaining a tour schedule that will take them all over the country, and hopefully to you.
7:00 PM - ‘tweener: SPOONFED TRIBE's Weapon's of Mass Percussion: A Percussive Pyrotechnic Performance. Spoonfed's lead guitarist is formally trained in the fire dancing of his native country of Samoa. He does his thing breathing fire as the rest of the fellas from the group do some amazing percussive stuff with drums etc. You'll see Troy spinning and eating fire and you'll see the guys doing percussion around him! Very cool stuff!
7:30 PM - THE MOTET, spearheaded by drummer extraordinaire Dave Watts, continues its tradition as one of the most eclectic bands on the scene today. Their unique blend of Afro-Beat, Afro-Cuban, Latin, Funk and Jazz traditions defies categorization. Drawing on the wealth of musical inspiration in the band’s hometown of Boulder, CO, The Motet never fails to inspire fans and enthrall the crowd. The music is a grooving improvisation that awakens and stirs the soul. Throughout its history, the music of The Motet has explored an unparalleled depth of influences. The band has played Cuban folkloric music, frenzied samba rhythms and straight-ahead funk. The latest Motet material draws on Afro-Beat, a genre inspired by the legendary Fela Kuti. These instrumental compositions encourage the listener to redefine the way they look at jazz and enhance The Motet’s reputation as a world-class ensemble. The present definition of The Motet draws heavily from the material on their brand new album: Music for Life (Harmonized Records, 2004). Music for Life is the first release from The Motet since Live (Harmonized Records, 2002) and the first studio album since Play (Anonym Records, 2000). Filled with catchy rhythms and hypnotic beats this new album brings to life The Motet’s expansion into the conscious and inspiring world of Afro-Beat. The result is an instrumental reinvention of the sonic soulfulness that has become the band's trademark. The Motet is a rare example of a band whose repertoire is entirely composed by its drummer. Dave Watts attended the Berkeley College of Music before the inception of Shockra, a popular funk group that helped lay the groundwork for today’s jamband scene. He has performed with an extensive group of renowned musicians and is a founding member of both Skin and The Theory of Everything. Under Dave Watts’ direction, The Motet has welcomed an impressive roster of outstanding musicians into its ranks throughout its history. There are two constants in the world of The Motet: evolving music and matchless musicianship. The constantly evolving sound of The Motet defies definition as the band takes the music to new levels with every performance. Whatever the occasion, wherever the gig, The Motet is winning the hearts, souls and dancing feet of fans all over the country. Featuring Dave Watts (drums), Garrett Sayers (bass), Dominic Lalli (saxophone), Scott Messersmith (percussion), Greg Raymond (keyboards), Scott Hall (guitar).
