MUSIC SCHEDULE & ARTIST DESCRIPTIONS:

SATURDAY 8/2/03

11:00 AM - WOOKIEFOOT is more then your typical jam band. They bring a unique and memorable experience to each performance. Performing their own psychedelic mix of reggae, hip-hop, hard-edged rock and funk, we’re sure they have something special planned for this year's NedFest. Whether it is costumes, fire dancers, flying clowns, or stilt walkers, WookieFoot is going to shock the hell out all of us. And it's NOT like a 90 minute set - then they they leave! WookieFoot actually sets up a circus tent and stays the entire weekend. They organize drum circles, mediation, and other activities, and have been known to create role playing games that get festival-goers involved. The entity that is WookieFoot has existed for over seven years. Like Parliment, the faces change but the mission remains the same. The band currently consists of Mark Murphy (Guitar, Keys, Vocals), JoJo Lash (Bull Horn, Vocals, Flute, Crowd Stimulator), Tom Lewandowski (Bass, Vocals, 808 Samples), Joe Mechtenberg (Reeds, Flute, Trumpet), Scooter Jones (Guitar, Percussion, Vocals), Matt Cartee (Drums) and Nick Kosevitch (Vocals, Noise Art). The traveling circus has been together for two years and can have up to 30 performers including fire, unicycles, acrobats, dancers, interactive costumed characters and a whole lot more! Be sure to get here early because WookieFoot is NOT to be missed!!!

‘Tweener set: CAMERON BYERS has been playing guitar for a long time. Be sure to catch this special solo acoustic set.

12:35 PM - SKERIK and BLACK FRAMES defy categorization. This fearsome foursome of truly creative musicians puts on a one-of-a-kind live experience. Lacking any prejudice as to what kind of music they play, this ensemble’s performances vary from jazz to rock crooner to a loose gig with Galactic's Stanton Moore. Throughout, the collective always maintains a nose for quality and a stoic resistance to selling out. Known for their top-notch playing, at times classy and tasteful yet always capable of turning on a dime to peel off into the atmosphere at shocking speeds, Black Frames' music speaks loudly. These band is comprised of three members of the Seattle-based Critters Buggin’... saxophonist Skerik, a catalyst whose considerable talent and infectious enthusiasm has resulted in numerous collaborations with some of today’s most respected artists (Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Garage a Trois, Robert Randolph, Roger Waters, Fred Wesley, Mike Clark, Melvin Sparks, Charlie Hunter, Robert Walter, George Porter Jr., DJ Logic, Colonel Bruce Hampton & ARU, Crack Sabbath, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, etc.), percussionist Mike Dillon (Karl Densen's Tiny Universe, HairyApesBMX, Malachy Papers, MC 900 Foot Jesus, Brave Combo, etc.), and bassist Brad Houser (Edie Brickell and New Bohemians). Rounding out the group is drummer Earl Harvin (Earl Harvin Trio, Seal, Trevor Horn, Joe Henry, etc.). They have been making a name for themselves up and down the west coast and have recently released their debut album, Solarallergy, to critical success. Now they’re bringing their sound to NedFest for one morning of musical magic!

‘Tweener set: SINGLE MALT BAND blends bluegrass, Celtic, folk, and rock influences, ranging from Irish and Appalachian traditionals to Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa covers, adding clever originals, three-part harmonies, extended yet orchestrated jams and occasional theatrics with glam-rock covers. Jeff Hamer (Guitar), Jordan Moretti (fiddle, mandolin) and William Downes (Bass) play with an energetic, refreshing style that appeals to fans of song-oriented folk music as well as dance-ready jamband aficionados... but their most important ingredient is exceptional talent. As Vince Herman from Leftover Salmon recently said, "These guys are all great pickers who together add up to one powerful whiskey-grass good time. You need to see them right away, before they injure themselves!"

2:15 PM - VINYL
shows are high energy and dance oriented with a universal appeal. Their infectious music blends old-school funk, Latin percussion, reggae and R&B into signature instrumental grooves. In February, 2000, Vinyl and Phil Lesh teamed up for a sold-out concert in Petaluma, CA with Vinyl performing as Phil's band. Such collaborations, combined with their national touring schedule has helped Vinyl become one of the most recognized bands in the jamband community. Vinyl was voted into the top 25 bands in the country by jambands.com's nationwide 1999 poll. As a national touring act, Vinyl has brought their unique show to virtually all the major markets in the United States and Canada. Highlights of these tours include engagements at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Berkshire Mountain Music Festival and three trips to New Orleans during the legendary Jazz and Heritage Festival. Vinyl boasts guest appearances by legendary musicians Bernie Worrell and Les Claypool on their most recent album, Flea Market. With this year's Tour, Vinyl brings their fresh, innovative sound to an ever-growing contingent of fans and groove junkies.

‘Tweener set: JON 'BLACKDOG' RIDNELL has been playing guitar and writing songs for over 20 years. Born in Bronxville, NY, he discovered the Blues at an early age through Eric Clapton. He later discovered a taste for jazz, studying with greats Link Chamberlain, Steve Brown, and Jim Hall. John's voice has come into it's own with a unique style, rounding off his musical sound greatly. Be sure to catch this special solo acoustic set.

3:55 PM - THE MOTET
is winning the heart and soul (and feet) of fans from coast to coast, bringing an eclectic mix of Cuban, West African, Funk, Soul, and Jazz traditions to every stage. Since its conception on Halloween of 1998, this Boulder-based outfit has been astonishing audiences with an uncanny ability to funnel bottomless musical inspiration into superbly unpredictable sets. On any given night they might take their audience into the streets of New Orleans for some "swampy" funk, to the villages of West Africa for a taste of traditional drum rhythms, to the cities of Cuba for a bit of Latin Jazz, or even to the clubs of New York City for some polished James Brown-type funk. While maintaining brilliant variability, one thing remains constant: the ability for this ensemble to excite every crowd into a dancing frenzy. Through greater than the sum of its parts, The Motet is comprised of some of Boulder’s premiere musicians. Setting the foundation is Dave Watts on the drum kit. Watts brings a seasoned resume of experience to the table having played with the likes of Shockra, Skin, Tony Furtado, Keller Williams, and The Theory of Everything. On percussion is New Orleans-based Scott Messersmith. Not only steeped in the rich styles of his hometown, Messersmith also brings his extensive study of Cuban, West African, and Brazilian drumming to The Motet’s mix. On organ, Fender Rhodes, and piano, is keyboardist Greg Raymond. With influences ranging from Herbie Hancock to Jimmy Smith and Doctor John, Raymond brings a hard-hitting jazz and fusion element to the band driving The Motet’s jams to new musical peaks. Garrett Sayers, former bassist of Miracle Orchestra, holds down the low end and then some! The band usually has a special guest or two with them at every show! If ever there was a group assembled to defy musical boundaries, challenge musical categories, and harvest endless world influences while simultaneously sending its audiences into oblivion, it is The Motet. (They are the only band that has performed at all five NedFests!)

‘Tweener set: SAMBA DENDE... Samba: (n.) a Brazilian dance of African origin with a basic pattern of step-close-step-close and characterized by a dip and spring upward at each beat of the music; also: the music for this dance. This is going to be a big ole' hooplah with Samba Dende, so be ready to samba!

5:40 PM - GARAJ MAHAL has certainly created a serious buzz on the jamband frontier. Born amidst the thriving Bay Area jamband scene, they quickly separated themselves from the pack. Their shows on the west coast have become legendary, and music related e-mail lists are constantly seeing posts from music fans gushing about how they had just been blown away by their first Garaj Mahal show. This rabid fanaticism can be partially attributed to the virtuoso level of musicianship each member of this band possesses. Fareed Haque on guitar (Dizzy Gillespie, Sting, Tony Williams, Joe Zawinul) and Kai Eckhardt on bass (John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu) are world-class musicians who have been dazzling audiences with their uncanny abilities for years. The band was formed when Eckhardt and Haque combined forces with young prodigies Alan Hertz on drums (KVHW) and Eric Levy on Hammond B-3 Organ to play psychedelic improvisational rock comprised of hard-hitting funky beats, deep modal explorations, and astonishing solos. Their unique blend of funk, jazz, R&B and blues with a tasty world music flare makes any Garaj Mahal show something to see.

‘Tweener set: TBA?!?

7:30 PM - VICTOR WOOTEN is one of the most celebrated electric bassists of all time. His secret seems to lie in doing his own thing, breaking boundaries and defying categorization along the way. Chip Stern wrote in Musician Magazine that he is "proof that all men are not created equal." To this Victor says, "A lot of guys who have been around for a long time are shocked when they see some of the things I am doing. Fortunately, they like it." Victor's performances as a member of the Grammy-award winning Béla Fleck and the Flecktones have gained him the adoration of bass players and music fans worldwide. He was awarded a 1999 Nashville Music Award for Bassist of the Year (his second) and in 1998, he received his third Bass Player of the Year award from Bass Player Magazine (the only bassist to have received this award more than once) and was named one of the Top 10 Bass Innovators of the '90s by the same publication. Also in 1998, Vic won his second Grammy (Best Instrumental Composition for Almost 12 from The Flecktones album Left of Cool) and Down Beat magazine voted him Talent Most Deserving Wider Recognition. On Yin Yang, his third solo album, Victor again shows why he is considered a master of the electric bass. Throughout the album, Vic astounds with his remarkable technique, all the more exceptional for the fact that it never gets in the way of his earthy feeling for the groove. Together with a collection of guest artists including Kirk Whalum, Bootsy Collins, Peter Rowan, Steve Bailey, Count Bass D, Béla Fleck, Carter Beauford, Jeff Coffin, Rod McGaha, J.D. Blair, Stuart Duncan and The Wooten Brothers, Wooten has created a phenomenal musical offering full of creative compositions.

8:15 PM to 9:00 PM - NEDERLAND ACID JAZZ is a live, improvisational jazz performance in which the roster of musicians changes from week to week. The players usually do not know with whom they will be performing until they show up, and often they have never performed with one and other ever before. At times they have not even met until just before the gig… hence the acid in this acid jazz! You never know what you're going to get, but this always-evolving cast of extremely high-caliber musicians forces a fresh spark and creates a brand-new sound every time. This special NedFest NAJ will feature Flecktone VICTOR WOOTEN on bass, Fareed Haque on guitar, Kai Eckhardt on bass, Dave Watts on drums, Christian Teele on percussion, Scott Messersmith on percussion, plus more to be announced?!?

SUNDAY 8/3/03

11:00 AM - POSSUM LOGIC is possumbly the best band you’ve never heard of. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Possum Logic includes two of the best (and most prolific) songwriters on the club circuit today, Brendan MacNaughton and Pete Kartsounes. Originally formed in the summer of 2001 as Acoustic Semi, the band continues to play an electric combination of new-grass, funk, blues, soul and folk. With a combined 28 years on the stage, it’s easy to forget that most of songs you’ll hear are original (close to a hundred songs). In fact, most of what you will hear is brand spanking new in 2003. The band has supported some pretty serious acts including "The Radiators" and "Merl Saunders". Then there's the Jerry Garcia Band, Littlefeat, Sonia Dada, Leftover Salmon ...and many, many MOE. Most recently they’ve done a handful of shows with the North Mississippi Allstars. The band features Brendan MacNaughton on acoustic rhythm guitar and vocals and Pete Kartsounes on acoustic and electric lead guitar, vocals and harmonica. Ryan Sapp is a naturanimal on the drums. New member Jason Greisa slaps time on the bass gee-tar and preaching some funky religion on the keys is the father of psychotic musical meltdowns, the Hallellulah Man, James "The Reverend" Thomas! Possum Logic defines "Live and Local". This band is extremely accessible and crowd friendly. So come out early and dance, or as they like to say... Step Up and Get Down!

‘Tweener set: THE WAYFARERS is a Boulder-based group founded in the fall of 2002 and has already become the leading traditional Irish band in the Southwest. With decades of diverse musical experience under their belts, The Wayfarers communicate a great respect for the roots of Irish music as they color tradition with a progressive flair that is all their own. They recently competed against 12 tight-knit bluegrass ensembles in the band competition at the 2003 Telluride Bluegrass Festival and took second place. Sean Sutherland ~ Bouzouki and Guitar: Sean was raised in Woburn, Massachusetts and started playing acoustic music on guitar at the age of fifteen. After exploring a wide range of musical styles including rock and bluegrass, Sean's musical fate was sealed when a recording of the Bothy Band ignited his passion for Irish music. He started playing bouzouki in an effort to combine the accompaniment aspects of his guitar playing with the melodic elements of the mandolin. He progressed quickly, and in 2002 won the gold medal in guitar accompaniment and silver medal in mandolin performance at the Midwest Regional Fleadh in Detroit, then in 2003 winning the prestigious New York City Fleadh on both guitar and mandolin. Sean will be traveling to Ireland this summer to compete in the All-Ireland Fleadh in both categories. Jessie Burns ~ Fiddle: Jessie was raised in England by an Irish father and an American Mother and learned classical violin from the age of eight. She got great exposure to Irish, English and Scottish folk music through playing at sessions in Northern England as a student and began to explore traditional music with a passion from then on. Since moving to America in 1997, Jessie explored American folk music including cowboy, bluegrass and country music with a variety of Colorado based bands, and now concentrates mainly on traditional Irish and English folk music. She completed her first solo album in December of 2002, and plays a Sarasate Violin, circa 1780. Jefferson Hamer ~ Tenor Banjo, Vocals and Guitar: Jeff began song writing and playing guitar in the Boston area in his early teens. A founding member of the acclaimed Single Malt Band, he has performed and earned national recognition at the prestigious Telluride, High Sierra and Rocky Grass Music Festivals. He is in great demand as a studio musician in Colorado and has recorded with a variety of bands. His broad musical influences range from Frank Zappa to Bill Monroe, and his own compositions reflect his love of the American, British and Irish folk traditions. Christel Rice ~ Flute: Christel is originally from Philadelphia where she attended the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts as a classical flutist. She became interested in traditional Irish music after attending some of the renowned Philadelphia sessions, and soon exchanged her classical silver flute for its wooden counterpart, putting 17 years of experience into mastering a new but familiar genre of traditional music. Her first solo album, Tunnel Vision, was released in June of 2003. Christel plays an 1820 Proust wooden flute.

12:30 PM - THE MATT FLINNER / ROSS MARTIN BAND combines the talents of two of the greatest showmen around. Multi-Instrumentalist Matt Flinner is widely considered one of the hottest mandolin players on the acoustic scene! His playing exudes an exquisite blend of bluegrass heart and rich atmospheric texturing. He has made a career out of playing acoustic music in new ways. A banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Flinner later took up the mandolin, won the banjo contest at Winfield Kansas in 1990, and took the mandolin award there the following year. Sugarbeat, an eclectic quartet that also featured banjoist Tony Furtado, lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Demerath and bassist Sally Truitt allowed him the opportunity to master the mandolin in a contemporary folk and bluegrass context. Although he lives in Nashville these days, Flinner believes that his early years spent in the Rocky Mountains had a very real impact on his music. "There's an American harmony in classical music that's this big wide-open sound -- Aaron Copeland's work, for example," Flinner says. "So I think there could be something to that, that your surroundings reflect your music." With his singular combination of taste, tone and time, Flinner has created a sound that is unique to his vision and makes an important statement in the evolution of acoustic string band music. Guitarist Ross Martin grew up in the Dallas, Texas area listening to rock and pop music, unaware he was being influenced by the country and bluegrass sounds of his parents' record collection. While attending the nearby University of North Texas, Ross developed an interest in jazz and quickly decided to become a jazz studies major. His last year at UNT afforded the opportunity of playing and traveling with the school's One O'Clock Lab Band. After school, a desire to learn chickin pickin guitar styles a la Albert Lee, Brent Mason, Ray Flack and Jerry Reed led to a stint touring with country bands. For the past 6 years, Ross has lived in the Denver, Colorado area, working with a wide range of musical projects. These include: The Theory of Everything, Mollie O'Brien, Ron Miles, The Tony Furtado Band, The Motet, Nina Storey, The Matt Flinner Quartet, The Three Twins, Greenwich Gulch and others. His playing can be heard on recordings by the Tony Furtado Band, The Motet, Ron Miles (soon to be released), Nina Storey, Chris Winston, Armando Zuppa, John Baribeau, Billy and Liza, The Winstons and Kirwan Brown. Ross has also just completed his first cd, Volley, which is available at www.rossmartinguitar.com and at shows. The cd features 10 original compositions and performaces by Dave Watts, Greg Raymond, Marc Dalio, Bijou, Eric Thorin, Matt Flinner and Greg Garrison.

‘Tweener set: PATRICK LATELLA will do a solo acoustic set. Just him and his guitar.

2:05 PM - SHANTI GROOVE has developed an eclectic blend of improvisational bluegrass, jazz and original jam music guaranteed to inspire today's dance-crazed crowds as well as traditional music aficionados. The five-piece band features soulful vocal arrangements and distinctive guitar, banjo and mandolin leads over the tasty rhythms provided by upright bass and percussion. From a foundation of tight-as-nails traditional bluegrass picking, Shanti Groove breaks through the boundaries of acoustic sound into wah-wah driven psychedelic space!

‘Tweener set: NOAM PIKELNY hails from Chicago, where he picked up the banjo at age 8 in order to play along with his older brother on the mandolin. Noam spent his early years at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music and then went on to play the traditional bluegrass circuit with several bands based out of Illinois and Northwest Indiana. In 1999, Noam began studying music at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, the breeding grounds for his band, Waffle Hoss. Prior to joining Leftover Salmon, Noam performed with guitarist extraordinaire Slavek Hanzlik in the US and Europe. Noam's main musical influences are Bela Fleck, Greg Cahill, Mark Vann, Tony Trischka, Tony Rice, Albert Lee, and Buford T. Justice. Noam also plays bluegrass guitar and country electric guitar.

3:40 PM - THE BIG WU stands at the musical entrance to the American Beauty generation with its extraordinary range of feeling and expression intact. Fending off the music industry's pressure to conform to cute, stylish, butt-wiggling imagery, the members this Minnesota band have fearlessly chosen to exist beyond the mainstream, embracing their passion for playing music on their own terms, and their hard-won ability to just be themselves. There is an inherent sense among its burgeoning fans around the country that the heartland's premier grassroots attraction is on the threshold of something big indeed. Chris Castino (Guitar & Vocals), Andy Miller (Bass & Vocals), Al Oikari (Keyboards & Vocals), Terry VanDeWalker (Percussion & Vocals). FYI: 'Wu' in Chinese means "the uncarved block" or "the absence of nothing."

‘Tweener set: JOHN & BILL MCKAY: John has been playing guitar for over 25 yrs and has been composing his own material for nearly as long. His first instrument was piano, which he started playing at the age of 10. At the age of 11 he switched over to playing drums and at the age of 15 he picked up the bass and guitar. From then on the guitar became his main focus. Througout the years he played in various bands. In 1996 John earned a BA in classical guitar performance from the University of Colorado's School of Music. Recently he has been performing with the Wiley Cotton Band, which he put together to showcase a broader spectrum of his original material. In 1998 McKay recorded his debut CD, entitled Wiley Cotton, which is dedicated to his father; Wiley Cotton McKay. The CD is an acoustic-electric blend of eleven of his original songs. It showcases a range of bluesy folk and soulful rythm n' blues. Some of the musicians that appear on the CD include Mark Vann of Leftover Salmon, Derek Trucks, members of Runaway Truck Ramp, and his brother Bill McKay on piano and organ. John finished his second CD this year and is presently touring. This CD features John's solo style of playing. As a solo guitarist, McKay has opened for such national acts as Leftover Salmon, Hot Tuna, Dharma Bums, Zachary Richard, Sun 60, and Merl Saunders & the Rainforest Band. --- Leftover Salmon's Bill McKay grew up in Westchester County, New York, where he sang in the church choir as a young lad and began studying classical piano at around the age of 8. Throughout high school, he pursued training in jazz theory, and played in a number of bands covering rock, blues, and folk as well as beginning to write and compose. In the summer of 1987, he moved to Colorado, where he bought a beat-up 1957 Hammond L-100 and a Leslie speaker cabinet. Throughout college, he sang and played organ and keyboards in different rock and blues bands, as well as devoting time to solo piano performance and composition, the study of Native American, East Indian, African, and other world musics, and investigating electronic music. He also worked with the modern dance department as an accompanist and composer, and wrote and played the soundtrack for a friend's film project. Following college, he spent five years touring with the Colorado rock/soul/boogie outfit Band du Jour, playing, writing, and singing, and more than five years as the keyboardist and primary vocalist for the Derek Trucks Band. During that time, he had the pleasure of playing with many wonderful musicians including Gov't Mule, the Tony Furtado Band, Jimmy Herring, and Leo Nocentelli, and has shared the stage with Susan Tedeschi, Gregg Allman, and others. Bill's influences range from keyboardists such as Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Smith to vocalists such as Bobby Bland, Freddie King, and Aretha Franklin, to the great horn players, as well as funk and traditional American roots music-folk, and bluegrass. Bill has written and played throughout his life with his brother John, a highly talented singer/guitarist/songwriter, in the Wiley Cotton Band, and continues to do so whenever possible, pursuing an ever-evolving search for new and old musical journeys.

5:20 PM - TONY FURTADO & THE AMERICAN GYPSIES' stylistic range won't come as a surprise to anyone who's followed Furtado's history. He began playing in earnest at the age of 11 and was soon recognized as a prodigy. By the end of his teens he had won a pair of National Bluegrass Banjo Championships and joined noted fiddler Laurie Lewis' string band Grant Street. Although Furtado won widespread acclaim as one of bluegrass' hottest young players, one genre was hardly enough to satisfy his musical wanderlust. Striking out on his own with his 1989 solo debut 'Swamped', he quickly began adding new elements including Latin, Cajun, jazz, swing and Celtic influences to the mix. 1992's 'Within Reach' saw Furtado collaborate with such stellar players as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan, while 1994's 'Full Circle' delved deeply into acoustic blues and marked the artist's early explorations of slide guitar. Furtado's emergence as masterful slide guitarist was accompanied by a high-energy live show and a tireless touring schedule that's helped him to win a large and loyal grass-roots following. The fleet-fingered fretmaster is an equally engaging vocalist, and the band boasts an impressive line-up that includes guitarist Gawain Mathews, one of the best sidemen in the business, who complements Furtado’s intricate melodies with precision and care. Anchoring down the rhythm section is bassist Myron Dove (Santana, Robben Ford) and legendary drummer Tom Brechtlein (Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Al Di Meola, Robben Ford, Natalie Cole). They have a remarkable synergy and together provide an irresistible, nasty groove and a seamless fusion of styles and influences, from folk to blues to jazz and beyond, with Furtado's supple, fluid slide guitar work illuminating the melodic and emotional nuances. Banjo player and slide guitarist Tony Furtado has carved his niche among musical giants.

‘Tweener set: PAPA MALI is fueled by bandleader Malcom Welbourne's slide guitar chops and chunk-o-funk vocals, and is fortified by legendary drummer Barry "Frosty" Smith's monster drumming. They bring a mix of southern fried soul, blunted Delta blues, New Orleans funk, and tribal hoodoo rhythms. Malcom's personification "Papa Mali" is a salute to his home territory of north Louisiana. He was born in Mississippi and raised in Shreveport, where absorbing the blues along Bayou Pierre was just as much a matter of course as chasing the mosquito fogging truck with friends -- and equally intoxicating. He spent his summers with grandparents in New Orleans digging that city's rhythm (and blues) and after hearing the Wild Tchoupitoulas and the Meters on the streets of New Orleans at age eleven, he developed an early and ongoing attachment to Crescent City funk. A youthful adventure in Jamaica fired his passion for reggae and other musics of the islands, and gave rise to the internationally acclaimed Killer Bees (who have been Austin's reggae voice for nearly two decades). It was Burning Spear's band that gave Malcolm the nickname "Papa Mali" while Spear and the Bees toured together. Having just completed the THUNDER CHICKEN album, Malcolm now feels his music has come full circle -- encompassing his childhood in Shreveport, coming of age in New Orleans, experiences in the Carribean, and present home of Austin, Texas. It is their own uniquely southern-fried hoodoo sound.

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM - ROBERT WALTER'S 20TH CONGRESS is building Robert Walter a reputation as one of America's heaviest jazz-funk keyboardists. As a founding member of the Greyboy Allstars, he toured with the band throughout North America and Europe for five years. Along the way, he contributed to the soundtrack of the major motion picture "Zero Effect" and performed and recorded with such jazz and funk heavyweights as Fred Wesley, Gary Bartz, Melvin Sparks, Reuben Wilson and Andy Bey. Robert's own songwriting combines a vinyl junkie's passion for classic soul jazz, boogaloo, and funky 45's with a southern california attitude that one might expect from a San Diego native... laid back and groovy but still searching for the new. Now Robert leads a new band with a new groove and a national following (thanks to their ongoing and relentless touring). Contributing to the Twentieth Congress gumbo are some of the baddest players from the San Diego funk scene: Cochemea Gastelum (whose electric alto sax and use of echo effects recalls shades of his heroes Eddie Harris and Bennie Maupin), drummer Joe Russo (from Fat Mama), bassist Chris Stillwell and percussionist Chuck Prada. The band will be joined by guitarist extraordinair Will Bernard. The music these guys make has the spontaneity of new friends sharing old stories, the sophistication of real songwriting and honest musicianship, and enough soulful swagger to keep you struttin' through your favorite festival.

** PLEASE NOTE...
The Nederland Music & Arts Festival traditionally falls during what I call 'The Nine Day Week'... Jerry Garcia was born the First day of August in 1942 and died on the 9th in '95 (my 27th birthday). I feel honored to hold this event during this time. Look for future NedFests to fall during 'The Nine Day Week'.
