MUSIC SCHEDULE & ARTIST DESCRIPTIONS:

SATURDAY 8/3/02
10:40 AM-ish 'tweener set: DANNY SHAFFER
One of my oldest friends in the biz playing acoustic in the park. Couldn't think of a better way to kick it off.

11:00 AM-ish - SHANTI GROOVE
Shanti Groove has developed an eclectic blend of improvisational bluegrass, jazz and original jam music guaranteed to inspire today's dance-crazed crowds as well as traditional music aficionados. The five-piece band features soulful vocal arrangements and distinctive guitar, banjo and mandolin leads over the tasty rhythms provided by upright bass and percussion. From a foundation of tight-as-nails traditional bluegrass picking, Shanti Groove breaks through the boundaries of acoustic sound into wah-wah driven psychedelic space!

12:10 PM-ish - 'tweener set: HIT & RUN
Hardcore Lonesome River Band and Dan Tyminski/Union Station-like bluegrass sounds featuring Rebecca Hoggan (guitar, mandolin, vocals - All Night Honky Tonk All Stars), Erin Coats (bass, vocals), Todd Livingston (Dobro - Tall Trees Grove; 2001 Rockygrass Dobro champ), Aaron Youngberg (Banjo) and John Frazier (mandolin - Tall Trees Grove).

12:30 PM-ish - MATT FLINNER QUARTET
Featuring Gawain Matthews (guitar), Aaron Johnston (drums & percussion) and Sam Bevin (bass)! Multi-Instrumentalist Matt Flinner is widely considered one of the hottest mandolin players on the acoustic scene! His playing exudes an exquisite blend of bluegrass heart and rich atmospheric texturing. He has made a career out of playing acoustic music in new ways. A banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Flinner later took up the mandolin, won the banjo contest at Winfield Kansas in 1990, and took the mandolin award there the following year. Sugarbeat, an eclectic quartet that also featured banjoist Tony Furtado, lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Demerath and bassist Sally Truitt allowed him the opportunity to master the mandolin in a contemporary folk and bluegrass context. Although he lives in Nashville these days, Flinner believes that his early years spent in the Rocky Mountains had a very real impact on his music. "There's an American harmony in classical music that's this big wide-open sound -- Aaron Copeland's work, for example," Flinner says. "So I think there could be something to that, that your surroundings reflect your music." With his singular combination of taste, tone and time, Flinner has created a sound that is unique to his vision and makes an important statement in the evolution of acoustic string band music.

1:45 PM-ish - 'tweener set: SINGLE MALT BAND
This band blends bluegrass, Celtic, folk, and rock influences, ranging from Irish and Appalachian traditionals to Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa covers, adding clever originals, three-part harmonies, extended yet orchestrated jams and occasional theatrics with glam-rock covers. Jeff Hamer (Guitar), Jordan Moretti (fiddle, mandolin) and William Downes (Bass) play with an energetic, refreshing style that appeals to fans of song-oriented folk music as well as dance-ready jamband aficionados... but their most important ingredient is exceptional talent. As Vince Herman from Leftover Salmon recently said, "These guys are all great pickers who together add up to one powerful whiskey-grass good time. You need to see them right away, before they injure themselves!"

2:05 PM-ish - MELVIN SEALS' MELTING POT
This group consists of Scott Law (Mandolin - Hanuman/Living Daylights/Tough Mama), Chris Haugen (Guitar - Jambay), Dennis Smith (Bass - JGB), Stephen Hund (drums) and, of course, Melvin Seals. Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer, but he is most revered for his powerful and high-spirited Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. He has also played with legends such as Chuck Berry, Charlie Daniels and Elvin Bishop, but when you've had the good fortune to mix it up with Jerry for 18 years, what can you possibly do for an encore? After years of searching for the perfect blend of musicians, Seals is stirring it up again with his new band. From blues to funk to rock to bluegrass, the Melting Pot serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and some gospel thrown in to spice things up. Each member of this powerhouse lineup brings an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. With acoustic and electric ingredients and unusual combinations of guitar, mandolin, slide and lap steel with savory bass, hearty drums and, of course, a heapin' helpin' of the wizard's magic on B-3 and keys, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. It is a wonderful thing that Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with this latest project!

3:25 PM-ish - 'tweener set: HIGH ON THE HOG
Featuring Angie Hansleben (guitar, spoons, vocals), Curt Alsobrook (banjo, guitar, vocals), Brian Roman (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Ryan Spearman (fiddle, banjo, mandolin, vocals) and Dan Rosenfeld (Upright Bass vocals), High on the Hog is a stringband with a focus on traditional American fiddle tunes and other early, rural country music predating the onset of bluegrass. They honed their performance skills last summer through tireless busking sessions in Boulder and it was during these street performances (sometimes 8-12 hours long) that they began to develop the visual aspects of the show. Dancing, goofing, whooping, hollering, & the occasional under-the-leg-fiddling are all part of the band's medicine show appeal.

3:45 PM-ish - TONY FURTADO AND THE AMERICAN GYPSIES
In the last year, banjo and slide guitarist Tony Furtado has carved his niche among musical giants. By integrating America’s roots music (Blues, Jazz, Appalachian Folk, Celtic, Rock) and his own progressive use of melody, rhythm, and improvisation, he has become the frontiersman of a rapidly expanding "new American roots" movement. The American Gypsies project is a return to the core elements of that movement. The band "has been exploring the outer reaches of new American roots music," Furtado says. "This new project is an attempt to simplify- to refocus the music and send it off in a new, uncharted direction." The American Gypsies boast an impressive line-up that includes Paul McCandless (woodwinds/brass master from supergroup Oregon) and guitarist Gawain Mathews. McCandless and Matthews are two of the best sidemen in the business, complementing Furtado’s intricate melodies with precision and care. Anchoring down the rhythm section are bassist Matt Spencer and legendary drummer Tom Brechtlein (Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Al Di Meola, Robben Ford, Natalie Cole). They have a remarkable synergy together provide an irresistible, nasty groove.

5:10 PM-ish - 'tweener set: TALL TREES GROOVE
Tall Trees Groove is a great young string band quartet from Boulder composed of mandolin, guitar, dobro and upright bass. Blending musicianship with tight vocal harmony, their setlists cover everything from bluegrass standards to newgrass originals to progressive folk tunes. They play all kinds of American roots and traditional music (including folk, bluegrass, old-time, jazz, swing, delta-blues and even a few gospel/spiritual numbers) in their own style and also blended with the styles of their heroes! Fun, high-energy stuff! Check 'em out! Real Good Pickin'!

5:30 PM-ish - VINYL
Vinyl shows are high energy and dance oriented with a universal appeal. Their infectious music blends old-school funk, Latin percussion, reggae and R&B into signature instrumental grooves. In February, 2000, Vinyl and Phil Lesh teamed up for a sold-out concert in Petaluma, CA with Vinyl performing as Phil¹s band. Such collaborations, combined with their national touring schedule has helped Vinyl become one of the most recognized bands in the jamband community. Vinyl was voted into the top 25 bands in the country by jambands.com's nationwide 1999 poll. As a national touring act, Vinyl has brought their unique show to virtually all the major markets in the United States and Canada. Highlights of these tours include engagements at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Berkshire Mountain Music Festival and three trips to New Orleans during the legendary Jazz and Heritage Festival. Vinyl boasts guest appearances by legendary musicians Bernie Worrell and Les Claypool on their most recent album, Flea Market. With this year's Tour, Vinyl brings their fresh, innovative sound to an ever-growing contingent of fans and groove junkies.

7:00 PM-ish - 'tweener set: SAMBA PARADE with SAMBA DENDE
Samba: (n.) a Brazilian dance of African origin with a basic pattern of step-close-step-close and characterized by a dip and spring upward at each beat of the music; also: the music for this dance. This is going to be a big ole' hooplah with Samba Dende, so be ready to samba!

7:20 PM-ish - 8:55 PM - CHARLIE HUNTER QUINTET
At any given Charlie Hunter show, newcomers are easily spotted. They are the ones looking around the room for the bass player, or maybe the keyboard player, or both! What they soon realize is that all these sounds are coming from one man and his eight-string guitar. Hunter is in a class by himself when it comes to technique, as he simultaneously plays bass and guitar parts on a specially designed guitar (three bass strings, five guitar strings) often sounding like a vintage Hammond 8-3 organ. While keeping the groove element deep and funky, he's charted a more expansive musical course- developing an acute sense of lyricism. In his diverse artistic vision, the dividing lines between be-bop, hip-hop, funk, reggae, world music and rock are rendered non-existent and irrelevant. Performing with Charlie will be John Ellis on tenor sax, Alan Ferber on trombone, Derek Phillips on drums, and Denver's own Ron Miles on trumpet!

SUNDAY 8/4/02
11:00 AM-ish - BLACKDOG w/ Cecil 'P-Nut' Daniels & The PsychoHorns
Day #2 kicks off strong with one of the grooviest Nederland-based acts. Blackdog plays a very danceable style of music and the dynamic group has been leaving audiences in awe with their sheer musicianship and stage presence for years. Incorporating any and all musical genres... from funk, to jazz, to smokin' blues, to calypso ballads (sometimes all in one song)... this group furnishes their sound with three-part harmonies sung to original compositions as well as mixing in a few crowd pleasers. This NedFest performance will also feature a full horn section with Widespread Panic's pal Cecil 'P-Nut' Daniels, the horn section from the Psychedelic Zombies, and Matt Baxter. Wholey Cow!!! A 7-piece Blackdog band at NedFest!!!

12:05 PM-ish - 'tweener set: 'JUNIS PONDS' JUDE
Jude's influences include G-Love & Special Sauce, The Sugarhill Gang, Billy Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and her big Polish family from Buffalo which gathered for every holiday at someone's house to sing and play guitars, tambourines, shakers, washtubs, accordions anything that would make a rhythm or sound. She gets a similar feeling on stage and wants everyone to be involved and have a good time. She has all the qualities of the girl next door... she's a blonde with a warm smile who loves her dog, tends bar at a favorite neighborhood joint, and has got a voice many would kill for.

12:25 PM-ish - JIVE
This eclectic ensemble is a melting pot of influences: old school, new school and undiscovered talents which continue to unfold. Jive's original sounds and raw acidic grooves are the future for a heightened musical experience. They have become known for their late night throw-downs and after-parties following performances of major acts such as Phish and Widespread Panic. Blending groove, roots and soulful jams with a hint of electronica, these all-instrumental arrangements (with occasional vocals) hold plenty of room for musical growth beyond its boundaries. The limits are stretched every time the band plays live. If you like to get-down, this is the band for you!

1:35 PM-ish - 'tweener set: LIZ CLARK
At the age of 21, Liz Clark is one of Denver's most exciting new singer-songwriters. She has performed for over five years in venues ranging from coffee shops to prominent concert halls throughout Colorado. Her strength and popularity as a solo artist earned her a chance to open for folk-rock legend Richie Havens. A dynamic solo entertainer with brilliant acoustic guitar and piano styles, she also performs with a bass player and a drummer as The Liz Clark Band, who caught the attention of hundreds who attended a Joe Walsh concert when they opened for him in Denver. Liz offers a distinctly rich and intriguing sound. Her clever and poetic songwriting is refreshing, her singing style charismatic. Reminiscent of thoughtful artists like early Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, or current notables like Jewel and Tori Amos, Liz' original music is dynamic, compelling and timely.

1:55 PM-ish - CABARET DIOSA
Hi-Fi Latin Exotica!!! Performance art meets rock opera meets mambo meets ballroom dance! Cabaret Diosa's mission is to create "The New Electric Eden"... a romantic fantasy world of tiki torches, tropical fruit and lots of passionate Latin dancing. The band's theatrical side of the show is the medium. On stage, they portray comedic characters from a fictional Cuban big band of the late 1950's, whose wacky adventures comprise the gags and theatrical skits sometimes performed. The mission has even spawned a movement: The New Mambo Revival. While its sensuous agenda preaches love and dancing, the subversive sanctioned revelry and open defiance of their enemy, The Man, are dangerously clear. If making people feel good in these dark times of corporate greed is a crime then Cabaret Diosa is guilty. The current line-up is: Kimberly Franco (vocals, percussion, piano), David Sherman (vocals, percussion, clarinet), Miguel Ramos (viola, vocals, keyboards), Darrin Feder (guitars, vocals), Grant Rieder (trumpet, vocals, percussion), Ari Dvorin (saxophones, flute, clarinet), Paul Mrozek (upright bass, vocals), Mendel Rabinovitch (congas, bongos, percussion, coronet, ukelele) and Jon Rademaekers (drums, timbales, percussion). Come experience the ecstasy for yourself and dance yer ass off all Rico Suave-like!!!!!

3:10 PM-ish - 'tweener set:

3:30 PM-ish - THE MOTET

If ever there was a group assembled to defy musical boundaries, challenge musical categories, and harvest endless world influences while simultaneously sending its audiences into oblivion, it is The Motet. Since its conception on Halloween of 1998, this Boulder-based outfit has been astonishing American audiences with an uncanny ability to funnel bottomless musical inspiration into superbly unpredictable sets. On any given night, The Motet might take its audience into the streets of New Orleans for some "swampy" funk, or perhaps to the villages of West Africa for a taste of traditional drum rhythms, or possibly to the cities of Cuba for a bit of Latin Jazz, or even to the clubs of New York City for some polished James Brown-type funk. While maintaining brilliant variability, one thing remains constant: the ability for this six-piece ensemble to excite any crowd into a dancing frenzy, and it’s not just the audience that gets caught up in the group’s energy. Through greater than the sum of its parts, The Motet is notably comprised of some of Boulder’s premiere musicians. Setting the foundation is Dave Watts on the drum kit. Watts brings a seasoned resume of experience to the table having played with the likes of Keller Williams, Shockra, Skin, Tony Furtado, and The Theory of Everything. On percussion is New Orleans-based Scott Messersmith. Not only steeped in the rich styles of his hometown, Messersmith also brings his extensive study of Cuban, West African, and Brazilian drumming to The Motet’s mix. Offering extraordinary vocal talent to the sound is Jans Ingber. Hand-picked by jazz great Charlie Hunter as a vocalist of choice, Ingber brings one of the most exciting new voices to the circuit as well as his extensive first hand account of West African and Cuban drumming. Mike Tiernan brings outstanding blues, slide, and jazz guitar to The Motet’s mix, always offering audiences the familiar flavor of a stompin’ Chicago night club. On organ, Fender Rhodes, and piano, is keyboardist Greg Raymond. With influences ranging from Herbie Hancock to Jimmy Smith and Doctor John, Raymond brings a hard-hitting jazz and fusion element to the band driving The Motet’s jams to new musical peaks. On bass is Paul McDaniel. Whether it’s his 4 or 5 string electric bass, McDaniel is sure to put the crowd "in the pocket" with influences that range from James Jamerson to Me’Shell NdegeOcello. Whatever the occasion, wherever the gig, The Motet is winning the heart, soul, and feet of fans all over the country, bringing an eclectic mix of Cuban, West African, Funk, Soul, and Jazz traditions to every stage. One fan put it simply, "I never know what they’re gonna play next, but I know it’s going to be good and I love that!"

4:50 PM-ish - 'tweener set: : SAMBA PARADE with SAMBA DENDE
Samba: (n.) a Brazilian dance of African origin with a basic pattern of step-close-step-close and characterized by a dip and spring upward at each beat of the music; also: the music for this dance. This is going to be a big ole' hooplah with Samba Dende, so be ready to samba!

5:10 PM-ish - ROBERT WALTER'S 20TH CONGRESS
Robert Walter is building a reputation as one of America's heaviest jazz-funk keyboardists. As a founding member of the Greyboy Allstars, he toured with the band throughout North America and Europe for five years. Along the way, he contributed to the soundtrack of the major motion picture "Zero Effect" and performed and recorded with such jazz and funk heavyweights as Fred Wesley, Gary Bartz, Melvin Sparks, Reuben Wilson and Andy Bey. Robert's own songwriting combines a vinyl junkie's passion for classic soul jazz, boogaloo, and funky 45's with a southern california attitude that one might expect from a San Diego native... laid back and groovy but still searching for the new. Now Robert leads a new band with a new groove and a national following (thanks to their ongoing and relentless touring). Contributing to the Twentieth Congress gumbo are some of the baddest players from the San Diego funk scene: Cochemea Gastelum (whose electric alto sax and use of echo effects recalls shades of his heroes Eddie Harris and Bennie Maupin), drummer George Sluppick, bassist Chris Stillwell and percussionist Chuck Prada. The music these guys make has the spontaneity of new friends sharing old stories, the sophistication of real songwriting and honest musicianship, and enough soulful swagger to keep you struttin' through your favorite festival. For a further treat, guitarist Will Bernard will be joining the band for this set.

6:35 PM-ish - 'tweener set: LIZA OXNARD
From 'Zuba' and 'Liza & the Soul Stars', Liza will capture your attention with her guitar skills, enchant you with her ethereal voice, penetrate you with meaningful lyrics, and ignite you with her incendiary stage presence. She co-wrote 3 songs for two major Hollywood films, "Kingpin" and "There's Something About Mary", and was on the Capitol Records soundtrack album for the latter. Her sound includes hip-hop beats, rootsy rockin' guitar, soulful melodies, and sultry vocals. As a vocalist and songwriter she's on par with Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette, and Fiona Apple. On guitar she emits the intensity of Jimi Hendrix, the melodic sounds of Bonnie Raitt, and the soulful touch of BB King. Liza is currently out promoting her new album, "It's About Time", which was made with Billy Nershi of The String Cheese Incident. She will be performing this show solo acoustic, which is a rare treat! It will be a great chance to hear her beautiful voice and well crafted songs stripped down to elegant simplicity.

6:55 PM-ish - 8:25 PM - THEORY OF EVERYTHING
Thus far, this ensemble will feature Dave Watts (Drums - The Motet), Ross Martin (Guitar - The Motet/Tony Furtado Band), Robert Walter (Keys - RW's 20th Congress) and Tye North (Bass - Leftover Salmon)... Plus More TBA!!!
