MUSIC SCHEDULE & ARTIST DESCRIPTIONS:
SATURDAY 8/4/01
10:30 AM - BLACKDOG
Kicking off NedFest 2001 will be a casual solo acoustic performance by New Yorker Jon 'Blackdog' Ridnell, who moved to Nederland in 1995 seeking a more laid back experience and a better atmosphere to make good music and raise his children. Be sure to catch his full band (one of the grooviest Nederland-based acts) sometime in the future! (And if you've got kids, be sure to visit Jon's wife at the Kids Tent!)
11:00 AM - HANUMAN
Aside from stellar musicianship and the ability to cross many musical genre lines, Seattle-based Hanuman is about chemistry. The connection between these four musicians enables the music to transcend traditional boundaries and create excitement thru the exploration of uncharted musical realms. Paul Benoit's acoustic guitar moans with Bluesy African & Americana overtones; Tige DeCoster's acoustic bass softly sings melody or screams the funky downbeats; Jarrod Kaplan's djembe & percussion shed rhythmic texture from all over the world; and Scott Law's mandolin & acoustic guitar solos add furious tastes of Bluegrass & Jazz, boosting the band's improvisational energy to new heights. Stylistically diverse, many of the group's songs are set-up like Be-bop Jazz compositions; strong melodic heads, with room to improvise. Whether Bluegrass, Funk, Roots Rock or twisted takes of old Jazz standards, the group has the ability to play the same tune many different ways, departing from the standard song forms and then returning full circle at the drop of a beat or blink of an eye. Hanuman holds a cool groove!
12:20 PM - SINGLE MALT BAND
The Single Malt Band plays acoustic whiskey-folk music. Together for just over one year, they have earned a reputation as one of the most exciting bands in the Boulder, Colorado music scene. Blending elements of Celtic, Bluegrass, and Acoustic-Rock music, they play with an energetic, refreshing style that appeals to fans of song-oriented folk music as well as dance-ready jamband aficionados. Their intricate medleys of traditional fiddle tunes and original vocal compositions keep the music playing for twenty minutes at a time, dynamic and powerful, without relying on an overextended improvisational approach. Rich, melodic songs are the bandís primary appeal. They perform a multitude of exceptional original compositions augmented by covers of wildly diverse artists such as Jethro Tull, Bill Monroe, Fairport Convention, Sublime, The Grateful Dead and Bob Marley. Boasting three vocalists, The Single Malt Band delivers charismatic lead vocals, tight harmonies and dexterous instrumental playing in its creative, multinational blend of acoustic music (a.k.a. "Whiskey Folk"). SMB is comprised of Jeff Hamer on guitar, Jordan Moretti on fiddle and mandolin, William Downes on bass guitar and Depression-Era-Lookin'-Banjolin-Thang and Hooper Stiles on piano and keyboards.
1:50 PM - RUNAWAY TRUCK RAMP
This RTR reunion boasts some of the finest players from the area exploring the nether-region between rock, country and bluegrass. Emerging with sophisticated original material and tight covers highlighting their compositional strengths and on-stage eccentricities, they are more of a Rock & Roll unit with tasty bluegrass overtones. The band features a groove-oriented approach appealing to audiences throughout the West with it's four pronged attack of mandolin, fiddle, bass and guitar wailing together for a full bodied eclectic blend of jazzy heads, fiddle melodies and catchy original rock numbers over the driving rhythmic guitar and drums. These fellas are a LOT of fun! Last year's performance was a riot!
3:35 PM - THE NEDERLAND BLUEGRACID JAZZ ALL-STARS!!!
Like Nederland Acid Jazz but with bluegrass players, The "All-Stars" is simply a group of incredible musicians that Michigan Mike puts together for a one-time jam! Thus far, the line-up consists of some really great players such as Leftover Salmon's front-man & guitarist Vince Herman, Matt Flinner on mandolin (Sugarbeat, Matt Flinner Quartet), Dave Easly on pedal steel (Heartifacts/Brian Blade), Ross Martin on guitar (Tony Furtado Band/Theory Of Everything), and the amazing Tye North on bass (Leftover Salmon/Theory Of Everything)... plus many more great players and surprises to be announced!!! Stay tuned for the official buzz...
5:20 PM - YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND
YMSB has virtually exploded onto the Colorado music scene. After being together for only about three years, they have been packing rooms and turning ears, creating an audience that won't take no for an answer. Nestled in our small mountain town of Nederland, these guys have been spending their time combining the sounds of traditional bluegrass, high-octane instrumental arrangements, and powerful originals to create a fully resonated bluegrass for the High Country!!! People not familiar with bluegrass have become hooked, and those who know bluegrass say that Yonder is one of the best to come along in a long time! Gaining a reputation and backing from folks like Leftover Salmon, Sally Van Meter, Darol Anger and Mike Marshall and has pushed them to heights no one would have imagined in such a short time. No two shows are alike... ranging from hard-core bluegrass for the most traditional fan to full-on acoustic acid-grass for the freak in all of us.
7:20 PM - MERL SAUNDERS & HIS FUNKY FRIENDS
Closing off the Saturday night of NedFest 2001 we are graced with a performance by the great Merl Saunders & his Funky Friends! Born and bred on the San Francisco Bay Area music scene, Merl has been creating music for masses as keyboardist, singer, composer and producer for more than three decades. During the psychedelic sixties he toured and recorded with Jerry Garcia in the Legion of Mary and Garcia/Saunders road show. The new millennium finds Merl touring with Michael Warren (bass), Tom Edwards (guitar) and Deane Jenkins (drums). This upbeat group puts Merl and his Funky Friends ahead of the race as a top jamband with a zesty youthful audience.
SUNDAY 8/5/01
10:30 AM - JAMIE JANOVER'S LOOP REALM
We start things off strong on Sunday with a short set from hammered-dulcimer extraordinaire and frequent guest of the String Cheese Incident, Jamie Janover. Jamie's latest project is what he is calling his 'Loop Realm', where he samples his dulcimer music, actually looping the music and layering the sounds! Very cool stuff! Plus, look for Jamie to be cruisin' all around the NedFest grounds in his Realmsmobile all weekend. You've gotta' see this thing!
11:00 AM - JAKA
Jaka is a five-piece marimba, mbira, and percussion band originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico (now residing in the Nederland/Boulder area) dedicated to fostering ecstatic states through their original, funky, exuberant, world beat groove music that moves the body and spirit. Inspired by music of the Shona people in Zimbabwe, Jaka has a sound and vibe you've just gotta experience. Join the Jaka tribe and dance 'til you drop!
12:20 PM - BEING LARA MAYKOVICH
Lara was the lead female vocalist from The Motet's fantastic first CD, 'Breathe'. Check out her latest project, as she is backed by Bill Kopper (guitar), Matt Spencer (bass - The Motet), Mark Dalio (drums - Tony Furtado Band), Dave Lyons (percussion - Legba), Jans Ingber (percussion & vocals - The TetoM) and Robin Gray (backing vocals)! When they played The Wolf Tongue in January they had the audience into it big-time with their unique afro-cuban-latin-pop-world-beat sound... and it was their first gig ever! Lara sings great traditional Cuban and African vocals stemming from 100's of years ago, and evidently Bill came up with modern harmonies on his guitar to accompany that, creating a very moveable sound. My opinion as a professional music-person says that this is going to be the next group to sweep the attention of Boulder County music aficionados! Trust me, folks... this one is gonna be a cooker!
1:45 PM - THE MOTET
The Motet is one of the most musically adventurous and diverse bands to hit the national touring circuit. Conceived in Boulder, Colorado in October of 1998, they are a six-piece group that combines a variety of influences ranging from New Orleans Funk and New York Jazz to traditional West African and Afro-Cuban folkloric music. Most recently they have been working on their unique sound, drawing from influences like Lonnie Smith and Marvin Gaye as well as Grant Green and James Brown. Their main mission is to keep the audience grooving while also incorporating their more traditional side, bringing Cuban, Brazilian and African feels to the forefront of their western electric sound. The Motet sets no musical boundaries, allowing for artistic and creative freedom. This is a band you definitely don¹t want to miss.
3:35 PM - THE SLIP
With grooving rhythm, spelunking bass lines and hypnotic melodies, this is a band in a constant response to the muse of sound. Their music shifts seamlessly from sweeping chordal and vocal compositions to rhythmically propelled grooves to somewhat standard song forms. They provide a unique approach in which the bass or drums may take the melody, the guitar a drum line, the bass the chords, or the voice the drone. A simple standard jazz progression may take on a disco or reggae feel. An 80's power-rock tune may pop up masked as a sweet ballad. The music is as much steeped in the improvisational freedom of jazz as it is in deep-grooved rhythms and the melodic catch of pop, all the while maintaining a greater unified composition.
5:25 PM - CHARLIE HUNTER QUARTET
At any given Charlie Hunter show, newcomers are easily spotted.... They are the ones looking around the room for the bass player, or maybe the keyboard player, or both! What they soon realize is that all these sounds are coming from one man and his eight-string guitar. Hunter is in a class by himself when it comes to technique, as he simultaneously plays bass and guitar parts on a specially designed guitar (three bass strings, five guitar strings) often sounding like a vintage Hammond 8-3 organ. While keeping the groove element deep and funky, he's charted a more expansive musical course- developing an acute sense of lyricism. In his diverse artistic vision, the dividing lines between be-bop, hip-hop, funk, reggae, world music and rock are rendered non-existent and irrelevant. At NedFest, Charlie will be joined by John Ellis on reeds, Chris Lovejoy on percussion and Stephen Chopek on drums.
7:15 PM - NEDERLAND ACID JAZZ
NAJ is not a rehearsed band, per se, but rather an improvisational jam session with an ever-changing rotation of the best jazz and funk players from Colorado’s Front Range and beyond! Who would have guessed when it began in July of 1996 that ‘The NAJ’ would explode into the unique cultural tradition that it has? It has influenced both musicians and audiences alike. Many great bands have formed as a result of it... creativity and improvisation have been openly explored and expanded... and a lot good times have been had because of it! Thus far, this ensemble will feature Ross Martin (guitar - Theory Of Everything/Tony Furtado Band/The Motet), Tye North (bass - Theory Of Everything/Leftover Salmon), Dave Watts (drums – Theory Of Everything/The Motet/Skin/Shockra), Jamie Janover (percussion - Theory Of Everything/Realms Ensemble) and members of The Slip... plus more TBA!!!
