ARTIST DESCRIPTIONS AND SCHEDULE:

SATURDAY 8/5/00
11:00 AM - KUTANDARA
From Afro-pop to ancient mbira songs, the Kutandara Marimba Ensemble plays polymelodic rhythms and soulful grooves that will move your body and spirit. They are an eight-member marimba, mbira, guitar, bass, vocal and percussion ensemble that enchants audiences with original compositions and arrangements that are rooted in traditional Zimbabwean styles. Their music is infectious. It's new. It's fresh. It moves molecules. It is music of spirit.

12:20 PM - CHUPACABRA
Funk samba reggae jazz son montuno bossa nova salsa afropop blues merengue axé hi-life mambo! You never quite know what the town of Boulder might toss at you next, as it has garnered itself an identity that is as diverse as it gets. Reflecting the worldness of Boulder is a big band with a big name, Chupacabra, who has been called the hottest salsa-funk-dance band around. Together they are a very tight unit, and while their songs are well crafted, they can soar into vast musical expanses that transcend genre or classification. The group covers the gamut of sounds defined by countries around the world, using as many adjectives to describe itself as it has band members. In other words, if you name a type of music, it most likely fits into Chupacabra's style! Sounds from Africa, Cuba, South America, Europe and America only scratch the surface when speaking of the band's musical influences. They play jazz and funk with great skill and style, creating a danceable blend of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and other world styles. They traverse through Latin tunes, jig in and out of Celtic songs, and even give a taste of the Middle East. The sound incorporates South American rhythms with Western melodies, salsa and reggae creating accessible, energetic dance music. Their kinetic, street-oriented percussion, coupled with highly professional musicianship, delivers an unforgettable experience. With one of the most explosive rhythm sections on the Front Range the band still highlights other key elements of the music, like the tasteful guitar of Jason Virunurm and the skilled keys of Brian Juan. Violin and soprano sax lend a sweet edge to their high-energy, ultra-rhythmic sound. The band has got talent and is very user-friendly for those who like to shake it up on the dance floor. They are a band that will get you dancing and leave you wanting more.

2:10 PM - KELLER WILLIAMS
Don't miss this 'Killer' one-of-a-kind acoustic 10-string guitar player.

3:50 PM - TONY FURTADO BAND
At the forefront of Boulder's music scene is The Tony Furtado Band, which combines elements of jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass and funk to create one of the most exciting sounds of any band in the area. Tony (banjo and acoustic slide guitar) will be joined by Ross Martin (guitar), Erik Thorin (bass) and Mark Dalio (drums)... with potential surprise guests.

5:40 PM - THE MOTET
The Motet is one of the most musically adventurous and diverse bands to hit the national touring circuit. Conceived in Boulder, Colorado in October of 1998, they are a six-piece group that combines a variety of influences ranging from New Orleans Funk and New York Jazz to traditional West African and Afro-Cuban folkloric music. Most recently they have been working on their unique sound, drawing from influences like Lonnie Smith and Marvin Gaye as well as Grant Green and James Brown. Their main mission is to keep the audience grooving while also incorporating their more traditional side, bringing Cuban, Brazilian and African feels to the forefront of their western electric sound. The Motet sets no musical boundaries, allowing for artistic and creative freedom. This is a band you definitely don¹t want to miss.

7:30 PM - STANLEY JORDAN with NEDERLAND ACID JAZZ
A special treat just recently added to the NedFest 2000 line-up is jazz guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan, who will be playing with Nederland Acid Jazz. Stanley had a gig scheduled in Ohio on this date, but when I called him a week ago, he scrambled to get the gig postponed so that he could do NedFest!!! Check out the amazing guitarist who invented the 'touch and tap' method as he plays his third Nederland Acid Jazz gig and his second NedFest! Nederland Acid Jazz is not a rehearsed band, per se, but rather an improvisational jam session with an ever-changing rotation of the best jazz and funk players from Colorado’s Front Range and beyond! Who would have guessed when it began in July of 1996 that ‘The NAJ’ would explode into the unique cultural tradition that it has? It has influenced both musicians and audiences alike. Many great bands have formed as a result of it... creativity and improvisation have been openly explored and expanded... and a lot good times have been had because of it! Thus far, Ensemble # 239 will also feature Ross Martin (guitar - The Motet, Tony Furtado Band, Greenwich Gulch), Bill Kopper (guitar - Bill Kopper Project) - Erik Deutsch (keys – Fat Mama), Dave Watts (drums – The Motet, Shockra, Skin), Eric Thorin (bass – Tony Furtado Band) and Jamie Janover (percussion – The Realms Ensemble).

SUNDAY 8/6/00
11:00 AM - THE NEW COUNTRY KITCHEN
100% Acoustic Juice! From Rome, Italy, this bluegrass group doesn't speak a lick of English... but they can sing it, as they learned all the songs phonetically. As young teenagers so inspired by the music from the 'Dueling Banjos' scene in the classic film 'Deliverance', these fellas decided that they were going to be in a bluegrass band. However, none of them knew how to play an instrument. Together they decided who was going to learn which instrument... and the rest is history. *** Big News: NCK just took 2nd place in the Best Band Competition at The RockyGrass Festival this past weekend!! *** Don't forget: NCK will be playing The Wolf Tongue Brewery on August 3rd... just two days before NedFest. We know that after you see these guys play the show on Thursday you are going to want to make it out early to cheer them on for their set at the Festival!!

12:20 PM - RYAN SHUPE & THE RUBBERBAND
This self dubbed "PostHeeHawFunkadelicHipHopNewGrass" music blends elements of rock, country, folk, pop, bluegrass and jazz with the creative songwriting of Ryan Shupe. The band creates it’s own unique genre of music that must be heard. Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband play instruments such as guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, fiddle, bass, drums, banjo and keyboard. From Salt Lake City, UT, these guys won the Best Band Competition at The 1997 Telluride Bluegrass Festival and were featured on The 25th Anniversary Telluride Festival CD.

1:40 PM - THAMUSEMEANT
This Santa Fe, New Mexico group blows Nederland away every time they play here. With a sound that transcends any existing genre, the band describes their music as 'Cosmic Americana'. The music stems from the grass roots of Irish, bluegrass, country and swing and they combine elements of jam rock, jazz and folk with talented songwriting to produce a uniquely moving musical experience. Nathan Moore writes insanely catchy songs with intelligent, insightful lyrics at a pace to rival Bob Dylan, and sings them in a voice often compared to Tom Waits. Moore plays guitar and harmonica and shares lead vocals with bass player Aimee Curl, whose voice tends to make people forget what they were doing and stare with rapt attention. Multi-instrumentalist virtuoso David Tiller provides uplifting melodies on the mandolin and fiddle, while Jeff Sussman lays out a driving beat on an impressive array of percussion instruments. The result is an eclectic mix of songs that appeal to a wide audience. The band has been together for six years and lived for part of that time in Austin, Texas, where they recently returned as a featured band at the South by Southwest Festival. They have appeared in the H.O.R.D.E. Festival and played the main stage again this summer at the High Sierra Music Festival. THIS BAND ROCKS!!!

3:30 PM - RUNAWAY TRUCK RAMP
One of the bands on the forefront of the Front Range musical explosion, Runaway Truck Ramp boasts some of the finest players from their area exploring the nether-region between rock, country and bluegrass. Emerging with sophisticated original material and tight covers highlighting their compositional strengths and on-stage eccentricities, they are more of a Rock & Roll unit with tasty bluegrass overtones. The band features a groove-oriented approach appealing to audiences throughout the West with it's four pronged attack of mandolin, fiddle, bass and guitar wailing together for a full bodied eclectic blend of jazzy heads, fiddle melodies and catchy original rock numbers over the driving rhythmic guitar and drums. Already with one CD under their belt, they have proven they have the talent necessary.

5:20 PM - YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND
YMSB has virtually exploded onto the Colorado music scene. After being together for only about two years, they have been packing rooms and turning ears, creating an audience that won't take no for an answer. Nestled in our small mountain town of Nederland, these guys have been spending their time combining the sounds of traditional bluegrass, high-octane instrumental arrangements, and powerful originals to create a fully resonated bluegrass for the High Country!!! People not familiar with bluegrass have become hooked, and those who know bluegrass say that Yonder is one of the best to come along in a long time! Gaining a reputation and backing from folks like Leftover Salmon, Sally Van Meter, Darol Anger and Mike Marshall and has pushed them to heights no one would have imagined in such a short time. No two shows are alike... ranging from hard-core bluegrass for the most traditional fan to full-on acoustic acid-grass for the freak in all of us.

7:10 PM - NEDERLAND BLUEGRACID JAZZ ALL-STARS!!!
Like Nederland Acid Jazz (but with bluegrass players), The All-Stars is simply a group of incredible musicians whom Michigan Mike puts together for a one-time jam! Thus far, the line-up consists of some great players such as Hot Rize's 'Dr. Banjo' (aka Pete Wernick), Leftover Salmon's Vince Herman on guitar and Open Road's Jean Ballhorn on fiddle + More TBA. Stay tuned for the official buzz...
